Calum's PoV
I was absolutely fucking furious. What did Jack think he was solving by not letting Poppy back in the room? I'd told him the reason she'd left was to get me medication. I told him she would be back any minute. I shouted at him to open the door when she knocked but he still ignored me. It was safe to say we all wanted to scream in his face when Dave had rescued Poppy and yanked her into the room with him. I looked over to her but she was glaring past me straight at Jack. She was shaking, probably from adrenaline trying to combat the nerves of being followed around by the paps. She went to open her mouth but Dave stepped ahead and started the conversation we all wanted to have.
"Jack? What the fuck?" He shouted, his arms widening as he waited for Jack's dumbass answer.
"Don't start shouting at me! I'm not here to look after her, I'm here for Calum." Jack tried to justify, which angered me more.
"She's looking after me!" I argued to Jack. "I told you she was getting me medication!" I said before I shouted out in pain, arching my back before rolling onto my side.
"Calum?" Dave asked, running to my side with Poppy.
"Hold on Cal, give this a minute and it'll take the pain away." Poppy's voice was soothing despite the tension in the room. She put the medication into a needle and injected it into the drip I had up since the surgery.
"Thank you." I grunted as I buried my head in the pillow. "Ugh, please tell me I haven't broken it again."
"I think it's okay. Just aggravated. The medication should kick in soon." She said to me, soothing my arm with her hand. "I mean it would have been done already if someone had let me in but what can we do?" She said, her tone flowing with sarcasm and blame. I could hear Jack tutting from behind me.
"I don't need to hear this." Jack argued, stepping away from us to the door.
"Yes you do!" Dave argued, rushing towards the door. I managed to move myself onto my back again and watched the argument continue. "Poppy was outside the door with five paparazzi surrounding her, quizzing her about Calum. She couldn't get out. Whilst Calum is in here and under the care of the hospital you need to help their staff too. He needed medication that she had but couldn't give to him. Does that sound like you're caring for him?" Jack huffed and shook his head, folding his arms across his chest.
"Don't start blaming all this on me. Where were you, Dave? How was I meant to handle five paps?" Jack spat back, stepping away from Dave in anger.
"I was watching the other three, you know that!" Dave argued, gesturing towards the three empty chairs.
"Yeah and why were they leaving the hospital at this time of the night?" Jack questioned, knowing he had Dave cornered. Dave hesitated, stammering around an answer.
"I wanted some space." I answered drowsily, the drugs seeming to hit me without me realising. I'd been so caught up in the argument I hadn't even noticed the pain was gone or that I'd gone particularly tired.
"Yeah, he wanted to hook up with the nurse because he's fed up of feeling alone." Jack said snidely.
"Excuse me?!" Poppy snapped, clearly offended by Jack's comments.
"That's not true." I said, groggily yet wound up. "I wanted space and they gave it to me. She was looking after me like normal. There's been no hooking up." Jack scoffed at my response.
"Well we all know you would if you could have." Jack snapped at me, making me furious. With anger coarsing through my veins I sat up and spun round to him.
"How dare you! I'm not like that at all. Dave, get this fucking idiot out of here. I don't want him anywhere near me!" I shouted, my veins poking out of my neck. "Get him out of here!" I reiterated to Dave, who jumped up to move him but suddenly that chest pain was back. I sucked in a breath and fell back into the bed.
"Calum?" Poppy's voice was filled with worry as she put her hands on my face to try and get me to look at her. "Calum, look at me. What's wrong?" I could barely breathe, the pain was pressing down on my chest like they were all laying on it. I brought my hands up to my chest before clutching my ribs. "Your ribs again?" She asked quickly and I let out a small nod. The pain was awful but we both knew she couldn't give me anything else.
"What's wrong with him?" Dave shouted over to Poppy.
"I think he broke a rib when he fell. Whatever he's just done here has made it a lot worse. I need to call medics in here." She said as she yanked a red pull cord and an emergency alarm rang out from my room. Dave unlocked the door and loads of staff ran in, surrounding my bed.
"Poppy?" Mavis's voice could be heard over the hubbub.
"Following a heavy fall I think Calum broke a rib. After a moment just now he's in severe pain and can't breathe properly. I think the rib has punctured his lung. Not long ago I gave him liquid painkillers for his ankle so he's not able to have any more." Poppy filled everyone else in. A punctured lung? Could I really have done that just because I shouted at Jack?
"Calum we're going to have to run some tests, don't be alarmed that we're all around you at the same time." Mavis said calmly. Poppy got out a stethoscope and listened to my chest, asking me to breathe in and out at certain times. She then tapped my chest with her hands. Mavis took some blood from me and rushed out of the room to send it for testing.
"I'll order the scan just in case." Another said before running out of the room as well. I continued to writhe around in pain, praying that someone was going to help me out.
"Poppy." I breathed out, causing her to stop in her tracks.
"Calum, you're gonna be okay. We need to get a doctor in here now. Do you want me to get your friends back?" She went to walk away but I grabbed her hand and pulled her back.
"Don't leave me." I said, seconds before blacking out.
