Poppy's PoV
I knew Calum was right but I really didn't want to believe it without testing it myself. I had gone to work without knowing what to expect and honestly, it pained me to know I had to tell Calum that he was spot on with everything he had warned me about. The shift was dreadful. I had paparazzi following me around from the minute I got there to the minute I came home. They pretended to be visitors of patients, they somehow got into the ward, they were in by the break room and out in the corridor and in the bathrooms. I honestly couldn't escape. It was the worst feeling I'd ever felt. I wanted to treat patients, have that satisfying feeling that I'd made them more comfortable and treated them and they'd leave feeling their normal selves, but maybe with this newfound fame I wouldn't be able to do that anymore. I rushed into the building and to the lift, hurrying back to the apartment where I could finally speak to Calum and show my true feelings. Dave opened the door to me and offered me a smile. He pulled the door open wider for me to get past and I noted that he was on the phone.
"Yeah. Yes sir, I understand. Okay, no problem." He responded as I made my way in. Calum was sitting on the sofa with a glum look on his face as he stared at the tv. I cleared my throat to get his attention and instantly his gaze moved to my direction. His face lit up as a smile finally showed and he picked himself up off the sofa to make his way over to me. I rushed over to him and threw my arms around him, burying my face in the crook of his neck for comfort as he hugged me back.
"Oh Poppy..." He said quietly. "Was it really that bad?" I didn't want to answer, to speak or even think of what I'd just gone through for the last twelve hours... all I wanted was to feel the love and warmth of my boyfriend. I knew he was probably slightly mad at me for never responding to him, but if I had done it would have just caused me to break down at work. I was desperately saving it for when I had gotten home.
"Poppy, management need to speak with you." Dave was quick to ruin our moment as I peeled myself away from Calum reluctantly.
"Dave, she's had a shit time. Can't they speak to her later?" Calum shot to my defence instantly. He folded his arms across his chest and huffed.
"Sorry Calum, they said it's urgent." He thrust the phone into my hand without giving us a chance to answer. He put his arm around my shoulder and led me away from Calum, into his office where he shut the door and left me in silence.
"H-hello?" I said nervously, never having spoken to these people before.
"Hello Poppy, my name is Lawrence and I'm one of the management team. How are you?" He started off quite nicely, making me feel that maybe I wasn't about to get screamed at.
"I-I'm fine thank you. Just glad that shift is over to be honest." I let out a heavy sigh. "The managers there have expressed how unsafe it is for me to work there now, so I guess I'm unemployed..." I looked down at my feet as I tried to hold in the tears. I'd done all that work to help myself after Amelia and now it was gone just like that. Poof.
"I'm ever so sorry Poppy." He said kindly. "But that's the reason why I'm calling." He paused slightly as he tried to think of the best way to word what he was going to say. "We've received nothing but great feedback about you from stakeholders and employees alike. We saw just how tough working in a normal hospital is going to be for you, so we had a thought and came up with a plan." Once again I bit back the tears but this time from the nice words being said about me for once. After everything we had gone through, it was nice to get some good recognition. "We would like to hire you as the band's personal nurse for any issues that happen with them or the staff surrounding them. We saw just how well you handled the situation at ABC and would love for you to be a part of the team." Despite Lawrence being on the other end of the phone I could tell he was beaming. I really didn't know what to say or how to thank them. I'd be doing the job I love for people I love, how could I possibly say no?
"Oh Lawrence thank you so much. To you and the rest of the team. I would really like to take you up on that offer!" I grinned from ear to ear. It was funny how your day can change from one minute to the next. "Thank you so much! I won't let you down."
"That's what we like to hear! Hopefully that's made your day a bit better! If you could just do me a favour, I need to clear something up with Dave so could you pass the phone back to him?" Happy tears began to fall as I rushed out of the office and thrusted the phone back into Dave's hand. Instantly, he headed into the office again and left me and Calum alone in the front room again. He rushed over and pulled me into a hug as I sobbed, the emotions finally getting the better of me.
"What happened? What did they say?" He asked worriedly as he stroked my hair. I calmed myself down as much as I could before stepping away from him, wiping the tears away before I began.
"They asked me how my day was. I told them it was awful and I've been noted as a clinical risk so I'm practically unemployed..." I sighed heavily. Calum's face fell as he looked at me with sympathy obvious on his face. "But they offered me a job. They want me to be the bands official nurse, to go with you guys everywhere and help out if anyone of the staff gets hurt." Calum's face changed straight away as a grin spread widely. His mouth fell open as he pulled me in to a hug and then put me at arms length again.
"Are you serious?!" He half laughed. "Poppy that's fantastic news!!" The smile grew back on my face at seeing his delight.
"Yeah, apparently they'd heard loads of good things about me and my nursing from people." Calum pulled me back into a hug, which I fully embraced.
"I can't believe it. Finally some good is coming for us! I'm so proud of you and happy that I'm going to be spending every day with you!" He pulled out of the hug and grabbed my face, crashing his lips into mine. "I love you Poppy."
"I love you too Calum."
