REAPING DETAILS
Today was the day I knew that my life was going to change.
I was sick of having to put up with all of the rules, work and other 'essential' things that we are forced to do by the capitol.
Every single year I am forced to sit back and watch while 24 children like myself fight to the death and I will not do it this year.
Most of the time it is innocent people like Mae who get reaped and end up losing their lives due to their inexperience compared to that of the career pack and this year, I was determined to be the one to show them that even though I may be from district 11 we are not willing to be overlooked and outshone just because we don't spend our lives training to kill other less fortunate people.
Seeing as though my name was in there 19 times, there was a possibility that I would get chosen anyway and not have to volunteer but I seriously doubted it. So far I had been 'lucky' not to get reaped and have to risk my life but to be honest, I haven't got anything more to lose.
Sure, I have Mae, my younger cousin but I have never really been connected to my uncle even if he is the only one besides Mae that I have left. He doesn't really care about me all that he cares about is that Mae is safe and never has to go to the hunger games if he has anything to say about it.
'I'm scared TJ, we have been lucky so far but what if either of us get chosen?" If only she knew.
"I'm certain that you will be fine Mae! Your name is only in there 3 times so the chances you will get chosen is highly unlikely!"
"Okay!" Our conversation stopped short when we reached the square and, after having our blood sample take, we were separated into our groups.
I don't have any friends, nor any family I care about except Mae so I have nothing to lose but, looking around, I realise that I am actually doing the right thing by being willing to volunteer. Families won't be broken and children will get to live safe for another year.
I paid no attention the the same speech I have heard repeated over and over again until it was time for the female tribute to be pulled out of the abnormally large glass bowl by the extravagantly dressed yet ridiculous looking man.
"Thea Blackhem!"
No.
It took her only moments to ascend the stairs and, by the time that volunteers were asked for, I made my decision, even if she was my worst enemy.
"I VOLUNTEER!"
That day, I laid out my future for all to see, with some if any expectations to see Mae grow up and be the woman I know she will turn into.
That day, I planned for my own death, knowing the survival rate was low..
