Caila skipped through the forest, a grin plastered across her face. On the other hand, both Kaden and Nathen trailed behind her, battered and bruised. The night sky that loomed overhead began to brighten, the colours of the sunrise painting across the black canvas. They walked out of the forest and, as the greenery thinned, into the city. Tall buildings broke through the vast skies and houses took their spots on the lower grounds.
“She didn’t try slicing us into ribbons,” Nathen muttered, rubbing his sore arm. “…At least she had the courtesy to blunt her wind…”
Kaden kept quiet except for the sound of agreement. A smirk replaced her grin. Oddly enough, she took pride in that – the fact she could somehow control the boys. When they reached the big road of the city, they bid the other adieu and went home, probably intending to sleep the weekend away. Caila, however, slowly walked the streets, her eyes taking every intricate detail of her surroundings. The small cracks on the walls. The dim lightings of the streetlamps. The soft singing of the early birds.
Her mind involuntarily strayed and landed on him. ‘Wonder what could he be doing now…?’ Brief flashes of her memories with him played through in her head and she tried her best to try remembering all, but things were not to be. Parts of her memory were faded, most locked away. Even so, a smile twitched onto her lips. She was crushing on him for many, many years and she managed to keep it silent all throughout then, but recently, she had blurted it out to him on her coming of age celebration. No one else heard. It was as if everything around fell away at that moment.
She was rejected a week after but to put the icing on the cake, he wasn’t even justifying himself. He didn’t even try. He merely said that his feelings for her were on and off, and for the moment he rejected her, he didn’t even like her!
But he was a human and she wasn’t.
Her steps slowed to a stop. She felt her heart ache terribly when she replayed the whole conversation in mind, yet she couldn’t bring herself to cry. She knew she was sad and in despair, so why couldn’t the tears just come?
She looked up into the orange sky. “…In six months, Kaden would be of age…” She sighed. Kaden wasn’t her real brother, more like a pet brother. “Yet, he’s still fighting Nathen for that girl. Who was she again? Stephanie? Stacy? Ah, the name slips me.” She paused. “Somehow, I just thought of salmon…”
She stopped right at the side of her house, below the window to her room. Her parents would be asleep and definitely readying a tongue lashing when they find out she hadn’t been sleeping like the good girl she was supposed to be.
Aww, don’t despair, Caila. You’ll meet your mate soon!
“I highly doubt it… there ain’t a single male in this round dirt covered water you call earth that is willing to break down my walls. It’s better being single than hoping.”
She blinked her eyes, suddenly having Hale popping into her thoughts. His voice floated into her senses, easing the pain she just felt and comforted her in a way she never thought could be possible. Oh, how did it ever come to that? A soft chuckle played off her lips, a smile curving itself.
“Ah, but hope is for people who can’t dream,” he told her during their conversation.
Stop being so uptight, Caila. A guy will eventually come your way!
Her left eye twitched at the sound of her wind, which so conveniently cut off her fantasies. “Not going to listen to you now.”
Caila –
She looked up at the tree and put a hand on the lowest branch before easing herself up. She scaled it and carefully pried her window open before jumping and landing softly on her toes. Silently walking over to her bed, she got under the covers and allowed her eyes to drift to a close. Sleep overrode her system and she kept holding onto that wistful wish that maybe, just maybe, someone out there was for her.
Only her.
Just as she was about to fully slip out of conscience, a howl reverberated in her mind. She jerked awake as another howl came, this time one louder than before, causing her to grip her temples in pain. She could detect the worry and importance in it, all the while forming questions of the situation.
Alpha’s house in fifteen minutes! It’s time for a meeting.
