“Remember what I taught you, okay?”
She brought her head up to look into Hale’s worried gaze before breaking out into a smile. “Yes, sir!” she mock saluted. She then turned towards Kaden whose expression was grim and guilty. She skipped towards him, keeping the smile on. “Kaden… don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault that all these happened. It’s life. Things happen whether we like it or not, all right?”
He couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his lips. Oh, she knew him too well. “Be safe, Caila. Kick his butt, okay?” He brought her into a hug to which she gladly returned.
“No worries, I will!”
“What’s that I hear? You kicking my butt?” Constantine scoffed. “I doubt it.”
Her expression fell into a scowl. Trust the annoying rogue to ruin her moments. Without answering his taunts, she got into position some ways from Hale and Kaden, and Constantine did the same. She drew in a breath before exhaling it slowly to calm the butterflies in her stomach. This would be her first fight as an ordinary human.
With a smirk gracing his arrogant attitude, Constantine waved his arms in the motion of an arc above his head, the faint glowing of a white light connecting the two palms. Caila was confused. What was he doing? She turned towards her two friends, only to see that they were every bit as confused as she was. The light between his hands flickered and faded away, and not long thereafter, the same white light glittered around both he and Caila before surrounding the area like a protective dome.
As awed as Hale and Kaden were, Caila wasn’t too happy.
“I thought you said no element!”
He simply waved her off. “Take a chill pill. This is just to ensure no one will disturb the fight and also so that I know the boundaries of our battleground.”
She frowned, causing lines to show on her forehead. Could she really trust his word? She knocked against the light dome, wondering if it would break but it was as solid as rock. “What in the world…? What’s your element?”
“Welcome to my turf,” he mock bowed. “Welcome to the world of True Illusion.”
For the second time that day, Caila burst out loud. “WHAT?! That’s cheating, Constantine! You know the works of your element’s area!”
“Au contraire. I had set this to random, so even I wouldn't know what’s going to happen? So, you’re lucked out if the match decided requires using your element.”
“What –”
“And this is my favourite part.”
Before she could question, a mechanical voice spoke within the dome.
[Players standby. This first round of the match is about to commence.]
“Whoa!” both Kaden and Hale exclaimed, their eyes wide as saucers.
Caila rolled her eyes. ‘Glad to know his element amazes you…’
[Players are required to drink from the six cups and the one who drinks the cup with the Flames of Hell will evidently die. To start, both players is to agree on choosing a box from three.]
“Ooh!” Constantine squealed like a young girl who met her favourite pop teen “The Russian Roulette!”
Caila watched the overenthusiastic male warily. How could something like the Russian Roulette be fun? She waited as white light began to shimmer in mid air in between them, revealing the three old, brown coloured boxes. They were identical from one corner down to the creases.
