His growl resonated through the silent woods, waking every night critters with fear. The night breeze ruffled his black coloured fur and his seemingly dark black eyes glinted in the moonlight of the full moon.
“Kaden! Leave it!”
Her voice was silenced when another presence made itself known. She turned on her heel, the loose curls of her chestnut brown hair dancing in front of her face. “No! Nathen, don’t!”
The second wolf of midnight blue leaped into the air, his jaws open as it bared his teeth at Kaden who stood ready on guard. Nathen clawed at Kaden’s shoulders, his teeth snapping at the black wolf’s neck. Kaden moved his neck away from his reach, anger boiling within him. Bending his hind legs, he kicked Nathen away and immediately rolled over to a stand. He lunged forward without waiting another second, head-butting Nathen in the torso.
A yelp escaped Nathen as the air left his lungs and he dropped to the grass. Kaden snarled, standing a ways away while he watched Nathen shakily get to his feet, trying hard to regain his breathing. The anger in him grew, a growl threatening in his throat. He couldn’t believe Nathen said what he said. It wasn’t against the law to like the same person, now was it? And Nathen wasn’t the police for all he knew. The memory floated into his mind as if it was taunting him.
“I’m sorry… I can’t.”
He would have accepted it if she had ended it like that but the words that came out of her lips left him in utter shock, his mouth gaping open.
“Nathen said that you already have a girlfriend. You can’t be two-timing us! I refuse to be with you at all. I never thought you would be someone like that. I thought I was your best friend and I thought I knew who you were, but apparently I was wrong. Goodbye.”
It wasn’t even true! Crouching down low, he let out the growl and jumped to the side as Nathen charged at him, swiftly turning back around to bite the shoulder, successfully drawing blood. Caila watched the two males battle it out. She hugged their bundle of clothing tighter while a frown set itself upon her cherry lips. Why, oh why were men so daft? Her bright brown eyes disappeared behind the lids as she relished in the feel of the wind against her skin.
They are idiots, my dear. So why not stop them?
The wind seemed to whisper in her ear but then again, why wouldn’t it? It was her soul’s element, her counterpart of a werewolf. Caila opened her eyes, just in time to see flames floating about in midair. The fire moved with Nathen’s each movement, slowly wrapping around his figure like a shield.
‘Well, that’s unfair,’ Caila thought as she fixated her gaze on the destructive element. ‘Nathen’s wolf matured while Kaden hasn’t…’
A matured wolf will meet with its soul's element when the canine reached sixteen, which was the age of an adult. The different elements in life will choose their bearers, thus in turn becoming a part of the wolf’s soul and that element will guide it through the journey we all knew as life.
My dear, if you don’t stop him now, I think your brother over there is going to become wolf barbeque.
Caila’s frown deepened at the wind’s remark. She averted her gaze from Nathen to Kaden and then back. Kaden took a defensive step back as the flames danced in front of his eyes while Nathen gradually advanced upon him. Must she really?
Cradling the clothes with one arm, she fisted her free hand, feeling the wind curl around her fingers. Nathen lunged forward with his fire, the fiery redness lighting up the darkness. Kaden jumped away from Nathen and snarled at him with warning. The younger wolf regarded him with caution for he didn’t have the means to counter the flames, as speed and strength were all he had. No water was nearby but the cluster of tall trees that loomed overhead. Nathen whipped around, flicking his tail at Kaden in one swift motion. The fire shot across the air, lashing out at Kaden like a whip. Nathen jumped and moved with grace, dancing with the flames as Kaden was forced back with his every dodge.
Caila drew in a deep breath whilst she flexed her fingers. A pained howl echoed through the silence, bringing her attention onto it.
Kaden!
She quickly pulled her arm back, only to throw it forward in a swinging motion at Nathen. The dark blue wolf was attacked in midair, the winds interrupting his assault. He dropped to the ground but he quickly got back to his feet, a bit of sway in his movements. Caila let out another thrust of wind, bringing him back down to his knees.
“Stop trying to kill each other, will you?” she shouted.
Kaden inhaled and reverted back to his human form, the fur slinking back into skin, and he limped towards her. “He started –”
She threw a gust of wind at him. “I don’t care who or what started it! You’re mad if you’re fighting because of a girl!” Her eyes widened as she took in the lack of clothes, her gaze immediately turning away. “And put some clothes on!”
Nathen, now as stark naked as Kaden once was, let out a chuckle, only to have his clothes thrown at his face.
“Shut up and put some clothes on, you daft men.”
Caila turned her back to them as they dressed, her fingers absentmindedly playing with the wind. Was she jealous because they were fighting over the same girl? Was the fast beating of her heart the jealously or adrenaline from watching the battle?
Ooh, somebody’s jealous!
‘Shut up,’ she told the wind. ‘I am so not jealous!’
Somebody’s jeal - !
Caila tuned the wind out, ignoring its remarks about her jealously.
“If I’m right,” came Nathen’s taunting voice. “I recall a certain female being jealous of two guys fighting over a –”
A cloth of wind wrapped itself around his mouth, cutting him off of whatever he was going to say. Caila turned around to face him, a dangerous glint in her eyes, one more dangerous than both males added together. “I. Am. Not. Jealous!”
Kaden and Nathen faced each other and gulped. This was not going to turn out good.
