Finally, the last bell of the day rang. Kayla hustled to her locker to grab some books for homework that night. She navigated through the mass of people trying to do the same thing.
She pulled her phone out of her pocket to see if Rebecca had texted her back at all that day.
I'm doing ok, I wouldn't mind if you guys came to visit me though. My mom says I have to go back to school tomorrow.
She smiled at her friend's response.
Sam and I have to go to indoor track... I have a date with Andrew tonight too. I can cancel to see you though.
She put her phone away and started to put in the code for her locker.
"Are we going to Rebecca's later or nah?" Sam asked as she walked up to Kayla.
"I want to, but I have my date with Andrew," Kayla said as she cracked the door open and put books into her locker. She grabbed another and shut the door.
"Just come over after your date," Sam said, as they started down the hall. "We'll just be chilling and doing homework... Or I'll be attempting to do homework, and Rebecca will actually be doing it."
"I can do that," Kayla said with a smile.
They continued down the hall and turned a corner to go down some stairs. "Do we have to go to practice?"
"Yes," Kayla said.
"Ugh," Sam said.
"On the plus side, you probably won't have to see me barf," Kayla joked.
Sam laughed. "That's true. Jake probably won't be there anyway. I heard basketball practices are earlier and longer this week."
"They are," Kayla said. "That stupid tournament is sucking up their time."
"And I thought we had it bad, sheesh," Sam said, as they reached the bottom of the stairs and started down another hallway. "Anywho... What time is your date tonight?"
"It's at 6," Kayla sighed. "I'll try to keep it short and come over... I'm gonna need all the support I can get."
"Oh shit... You're telling him the truth tonight aren't you?"
Kayla felt like she was swallowing a brick. "Yeah."
"You can do it, Kayla," Sam said.
"I know I can too..." Kayla said. "I just don't want to."
"We'll have plenty of ice cream for you," Sam said, putting her arm around her friend.
A smile crept up Kayla's face. "Thanks," she said.
"No problem," Sam said, taking her arm back. "Just think... After all that ice cream, our lives will return to normal and everything else will just seem irrelevant."
"Yeah, we'll see how that works out," Kayla said. "Who knows, maybe Jake will still have the hots for you."
"Hey, I told you there is nothing going on there," Sam said sternly.
Kayla laughed. "So defensive."
"In all seriousness, can we just keep this between the two of us?" Sam said. "I serious don't need Rebecca freaking out over fake drama."
"Agreed," Kayla said. "I gotcha."
"Thank you," Sam said as she checked her phone. "Oh, speak of the devil. A text."
"What does it say?" Kayla said, trying to look over her friend's shoulder.
"He's asking me what Rebecca's address is..." Sam said. "That's kind of weird."
