"I believe you could have tried a little bit harder..."
How did he know?
Of course, I didn't know myself until I read it in Queen Elena's journal.
Entry 26:
It has come to my attention that something evil is inside of me. As my powers intensify, so does the evil. I realize that this evil is the root of my abilities, therefore it cannot go away unless I stop using my powers altogether.
Be warned this does not go away. You must learn to control it.
I never noticed this entry. I must have skipped it when I was reading.
I look in the full length mirror on the wall. At first nothing looks suspicious, but then I see her. She looks extremely similar to me. I didn't even notice the only difference between us; her eyes are a dark purple and mine are blue.
"Who are you?" I demand.
"I am you." She smirks.
"Who are you?" I repeat annoyed.
She lets out an agitated sigh. "My name is Ivy. Fitting name really. I grow until I suffocate my victim." She gives a knowing smile.
I am thrown back by her bluntness. "What do you want?" I ask once I regain my thoughts.
"Damn, don't you ask a lot of questions. I don't really want anything major, just you know, to join Zayin and take over your island. No biggie really." She waves her hand dismissively.
"What do you mean 'no biggie'! That's my family and my people you're talking about." I scream.
"Oh yes, get mad. That just helps your cause a lot." As she says it, I feel her gaining control of my consciousness.
I calm down. "Get out of my head." I grit my teeth.
"Kind of can't. You created me the moment you unleashed your fire on that crowd when you were little. And now you just unleash me more."
I scream in anger and bang my head against the wall.
"Child, that's not going to help." Ivy says. "You might want to stop before you get hurt. Don't want my future body getting all banged up."
I finally stop and rest my head against the wall. "Go away."
"Fine but I'll be back." And with that she disappears from the mirror and I see my own reflection once again.
Suddenly, James bursts into the room. "What happened?"
I throw him the book. "Entry 26."
I watch him flip to the entry and read it.
"Oh." He says in understanding.
"I saw her." I sat on my bed. "She wants to join Zayin." I clench my fists in anger.
"Why?"
"I don't know, but she wants me out of the picture."
"Can't you just get rid of your powers?" He sits down on the bed beside me.
I shake my head. "No, we need them to stand up to Zayin."
"Do the others have this problem?"
"Not that I know of."
He pulls me into his arms and kisses me on the cheek. "I'll still be here for you."
I relax. "I know."
