James pov
I lean over the results of the testing on the islanders. Hundreds of names, occupations, blood types, weights, and heights are scattered on the desk before me.
After our daring escape from the dungeons of the Ruby Castle, Ivy and I where promptly put to work. We had very similar jobs. Ivy kept an eye on the Queen girl, the rebel, and the soldier. I was in charge of the other patients in our facility.
The big difference between our positions was that she got to have all the fun. My job was in name only. I have almost no control over the tests on my former people, which is probably a good thing, because I have no idea what to do with them.
I place the results in a neat stack and and stand from the desk. The day was nearly over and I was to meet with Ivy over dinner.
I walk to my room in our shared suite and change into some nice pants and a nice collared shirt. I run a comb through my hair and decide that my attire is satisfactory. I leave the suite to make my way down the hall.
Heading to the ground floor, I glance at our previous messages. She said to meet at a fancy restaurant a few blocks from the research facility. She informed me that she would be late because of work, which I didn't find a problem, because she is frequently late for the same reason.
I call a taxi and tell the driver to head to the restaurant. I gaze out the window at the hustle and bustle of the city. If I remember correctly this city is called New York. I assume at some time there must have been and Old York. The city was also not always the capital. President Icas had to relocate to New York to escape the plague and be closer to the research efforts.
The taxi rolls to a stop and I pay the driver. I walk into the restaurant confidently. The hostess looks to be around 20 years old, with short chestnut hair reaching to just above her shoulders. Her brown eyes meet mine as she asks politely, "How many?"
"Two." I answer curtly.
She grabs two menus and gestures for me to follow her. She seats me at booth off to side of the restaurant. I order some wine from the waitress that appears moments later. The legal drinking age is 18 and I recently turned 19 so I am of age.
I take a sip of my wine and gaze at the menu, quickly choosing a random entrée. I send a quick message to Ivy indicating that I am here and gaze at the other people in the restaurant.
To my right is an older couple having a nice evening out and diagonally forward is a group of high class women chatting about failed marriages.
I shake my head at their conversation. What has become of the this country? Are marriages just supposed to fall apart like that? Will the marriages on Mes become like that? I am about to continue my thoughts when Ivy sits across from me.
"Hey, James!" She greets me.
"Hello, yourself," I say back.
"I'm sorry I was late. We got some report of the soldier girl on one of the cargo ships leaving Mes." She grabs the menu, flipping through it.
"So she's on her way?" I ask.
"It seems so," she says not looking up.
"Doesn't she know that would be a death trap?" I shake my head.
Ivy selects something from the menu and sets it down. "It doesn't matter to me. This just makes it easier to capture her."
"That is true."
We order our food and wait patiently for it.
"How's work been for you?" She asks.
"Boring as hell. I don't really have an interest in those people anymore."
She rests a hand on mine. "That's okay. Soon we will rule Mes."
I stare into her deep purple eyes. "I guess I will just have to wait then."
"Actually I wanted to talk to you about that."
I lean forward, "Really? What would you like to talk about?"
She rolls her lips into her mouth, "You know, you really did help us escape from the Ruby Castle. And you helped capture the Queen and the rebel."
I nod.
She taps her longs nails on the table, "It's just... how do I put this? You just have no use for us now."
I raise my eyebrows, "What do you mean?"
"Your efforts for now on will be useless to our goal."
"What?"
"So," she pauses to take a sip of my wine, "I have been asked to terminate our deal."
"Our deal?"
"In other words, I have been asked to terminate your life."
I stand from my chair. "Oh hell no."
She looks at me with a bored expression, "Don't make this hard."
"There is no way I will let you kill me!"
She looks at the eyes staring at her now, "My my, you are drawing a crowd."
I walk toward the door, "Just leave me alone." I turn my back on her.
I hear her stand, "Gladly. After you're dead."
A single gun shot rings through the restaurant.
