"I don't know if it makes sense holding onto a receiver... all be it a great and very talented receiver, who may or may not show up during the last few valuable seconds to seal the win. 2020, the season starts great for Beckham -then he's out for another injury. The 2021 season, Beckham takes them all the way to the NFC championship and then his body gives out AGAIN. Whose to say if the Giants keep him, that won't happen once again in 2022."
Odell sucked his teeth and flipped off the hospital room television to focus on the live stream on his cellphone. It had been three entire days since his surgery and he was feeling restless despite the fact that he had been through this twice before. He knew the slow recovery process was just beginning. But because for so long so many people put stock in Cassandra's procedure working for him, in the back of his mind he almost expected it to be a miracle worker. He was anxious to get to the miracle. He had to be continually reminded that he needed to allow time for healing first.
After the NFC championship party from hell, Odell's mother stubbornly stayed in a hotel until they left to fly back to Louisiana a day later. She went for three weeks without talking to Odell which was the longest time they had ever not spoken since he was born. Devastated, Odell reached out to apologize multiple times without success. But Heather finally came around after she heard about the surgery. She was not going to let her baby boy go through it without her. Heather flew back to New Jersey the day before so she could be there with him. When he woke up in Cornell Medical Center with a new ankle, his heart warmed to find her standing over him holding Cas's hand.
He was alone in his hospital room now watching as Cas sat in on a press conference lead by the Giant's head coach as Coach went over Odell's recovery and what it was going to mean for the team. Interest in his health status had only intensified after the string of angry tweets that he had just sent from his hospital bed. Then he got bored and started trolling fans by faking like he cut his hair.
It all culminated in this afternoon's press conference to smooth out the edges.
Again came the trade rumors. These rumors happened every off season like clockwork as long as there was no Super Bowl ring brought back to New York. But with Odell's third extended absence for injuries, the rumors had taken a nasty turn for the worse.
"The Giants are growing tired of all his absences from injuries."
"The organization has lost all confidence in his ability to lead the team all the way to a winning season."
The whispers were fueled by the fact that he did not have the best reputation when it came to the heads of the Giants' organization anyway. Though the rumors remained rumors, they never outright denied wanting to trade him. It wouldn't surprise him if they had considered multiple times how to get rid of him and make good on the huge investment they made in him three years ago.
"I see your new girlfriend is already cashing in on her investment." A familiar voice carried in to his hospital room.
Odell's head shot up to find Dez standing by his bed dressed in a sharp black pants suit, as usual inappropriately overdressed for the occasion. Just what he didn't need right now. Dez had conveniently resurfaced not long after his mom found out about the affair. Likely because Heather's rage conjured her back up. And she had been bad mouthing him publicly ever since.
