Ragnarok

"All a people need in order to rise up against tyranny is a leader bold enough to take up the banner." - The Saga of Harald Hardrade

It was the morning after my tour around the palace grounds, after Thor educated me on the nine realms, he continued to show me around. I was well accustomed to the building or at least I thought I was, being a maid here I knew most hallways, passages and rooms of the palace.

However, Thor allowed me to pass through many a secret tunnel or into hidden hideouts throughout the place. Each quarter signified a particular memory or flashback to Thor's childhood, running around this vast castle with the warriors three, Loki and other young friends. My particular favourite was the hidden observatory behind the hung, striking tapestry on the east wing, it was a stunning circular room, with a great glass roof. You could see a sky full of stars, planets and worlds from Valhall to Kverghjelme, it was truly magnificent.

Thor told me many a story of childish games and fortunes he carried out in the passageways of the palace. I had began to indulge in his fond times as a child, I started to compare mine to his, life wasn't atrocious on Earth, I had a normal British existence, I studied and went to University, I had a loving family and pool of friends, I was fortunate in life.

Although I took all this for granted, I never truly knew what I had until it was taken from me. I had affectionate memories of everyone I had lost, my mother, father and others, I was the sole survivor of my relatives, everyone I knew was dead and gone. I was alone in this infinite cosmos, or at least I thought I was.

Speaking with Thor yesterday almost bonding over our pasts made me rethink my whole belief system. Not all of these people are monsters they are just like us, only with their world still intact, yes their speech, fashion, rules and traditions may differ but in their own mixed up way I could understand their whole being.

As far as my head would allow me to empathise with the Asgardians, my heart could still not shake the betrayal of what they have done to my race. Thor a sweet, simple man opened up, sharing his personal thoughts and life, I couldn't help but begin to question my conscience.

This vision I had cradled all these years, this mask of a sadistic warrior with only death and destruction in his mind, was just suddenly torn from my grasp. The image no longer seemed plausible, this extensive idea of the golden gate prison I was attached to, abruptly transformed into a playhouse filled with charm, beauty and devotion. It had dawned on me that, I was in fact an outsider invading someones home. That this gargantuan land was a living breathing adaptation of Earth.

A petite Dagný with raven hair entered Thor's chambers, interrupting me from my speculation, I had stayed the night in his large living space, while he took himself away unknown to the world.

She placed a tray of breakfast fruits at the foot of the bed and continued with the cleansing of the chambers. I didn't know what to do with myself, do I return to my work assuming my position as slave again or am I expected to dress as I am not, as a royal parading around the palace at my leisure?

"Do you know of Thor?" I ask the Dagný

"I serve him and the warriors three, my lady." she curtseys at my feet like I am worth something more.

"Please don't do that, I'm exactly the same as you. Do you know whats he wants with me? Why am I here, does he intend for me to work with you? What should I do?" I grasp her arm in my panic, the contact shocking her.

"My lady, the god Thor, intends to save you. You know as a former slave yourself you hear murmurs, the walls speak and they have spoken of you. You are no longer Dagný like myself, you have been deemed royal, an acquaintance of the god Thor. Lady Alison you no longer need to busy yourself with the tasks of a slave. You are free." Her words flow fast and liquid like, a bright smile spread across her pastel complexion.

I stumble backwards in attempt to process the verse I had heard. I am free.

"I can't help but question these rumours, where is the origin of these whispers?" She sets herself aside me on the mattress.

"From the Allfather himself, as of only an hour ago. Lady Alison your encounter with the Queen Frigga caused quite the commotion in the councils chambers. Many a slaves safety was questioned, and the god Thor pleaded your case. Allas we cannot be considered in freedom, but as only so few were present when the queen attacked you. You can be pardoned, and the incident simply disguised and forgotten. You are at the heart of a Royal scandal, it is because of you Alison many slaves have been given hope of freedom. We look to you as a chance, if only you should speak of this in public, humans could be considered free." She has my hand too tight and excitedly gushes dreams of race freedom, rebellion and redemption.

"I'm free? Royal scandal, you speak of these as if I am some sort of leader. You know as well as I, if this conversation ever reached Asgardian attention we would all be in danger of execution. Secret or not, there is no hiding what I am to the rest of the realm, a human deemed as a royal is pure madness. I would be a freak an example of corruption. They have the power in this world, not us if they say what I should do, I would do it. Nor you or I can say any different, I cannot be truly free if my speech is guarded, this rebellion of slaves would be a mass slaughter, there is little we can do." Tears start to trail down my cheeks as my explanation is thrusted in her face.

"No you are wrong Lady Alison, we look to you as a symbol, only you have power over us, you alone have the power to set us free. If stated we would obey your commands and your rule only, no violence would be taken on our part, we would simply refuse service to those of Asgardian nature." She tells me of fasting plans and sieging techniques, slaves that have already started planning their own escapes, all because of me being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"I'm sorry, I cannot live up to this fantastical image you have deemed me to be, what would happen if we were to fail, it could threaten the entire existence of man kind. I could not be responsible for that..." My thoughts were thrashing inside my head, nightmares of war and extinction played around with battle fronts of human soldiers.

"We are not saying to take action now, but in time we mere slaves will have our moment and it will all be because of you. The whispers call this movement Ragnarok, they believe you're the chosen one the one true saviour to the prophesy. Please whatever happens Lady Alison, please do not become corrupted do not become as the Royals remember us, remember what you are. As one day you may need that strength." Her expression filled with fight and prospect, she rose and headed for the door.

"I sorry I don't know of your name miss?" my throat managed to score out.

"My name is Bernadette... Bernadette Waters, Lady Alison." she slowly bowed on her exit.

Could I really be the one to set free my race, could I do it? I had heard the prophets of Asgard talk of Ragnarok, the great battle to end all wars. It is a prediction of the fall of Asgard, the future end of the gods, the stories I have heard have been children's nightmares within the castle. The younger royals are told of this time of war and that if they train as warriors they may be able to prevail Asgard. Against their unknown enemy, were the humans really the great danger, the other half to the Ragnarok legend?

A/N Hi again if you're confused, in Norse mythology, Ragnarök is a series of future events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods Odin, Thor, Tyr, Freyr, Heimdallr, and Loki), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water. Afterward, the world will resurface anew and fertile, the surviving and returning gods will meet, and the world will be repopulated by two human survivors. Ragnarök is an important event in the Norse canon, and has been the subject of scholarly discourse and theory. The event is referred to as Ragnarök or Ragnarøkkr (Old Norse "Fate of the Gods" and "Twilight of the Gods" respectively).
