It's back

I look upon his salute, feeling embarrassed. Glancing up at him, and to my surprise, he is too.

Staring at his lips, I could tell he was trying to find something to say.

I had glanced past him for a moment and noticed the foggy window.

"It's back." I quietly said.

"Back? What is?" he turned his eyes to where I was looking.

I watched as he quickly made his way over to the window, resting his hands on the sill as he looked out and spoke. "Oh, the rain, yes." He seemed to have relax from knowing what was 'back'.

We both watched small trickles from the roof gently fall over onto the glass of the pane.

After a moment of watching raindrops race against each other to the bottom of the glass, we each met each others eyes warmly. Before he could make his way over to the bed, he turned back to the window and locked it. Thunder and lightning began to dance outside.

I gave him a concerned smile, but he passed it away with little effort. Just as he reached his hand out to touch my shoulders, we both looked back over at the window, noticing two lights shining at it. "No.." he whispered under his breathe as he began to quickly put his clothes back on.

"What is it?" I asked as I watched him rush, nearly falling trying to put his pants back on.

"Oh, it's nothin' you should be concerned for." He reassured me, but I didn't buy it.

Then lightning flashed, and a few seconds later the thunder played an oddly rhythmic song.

"Is someone at the door?" I asked. Feeling scared, I decided to encase my body in the blanket.

He hushed me with his finger and wrapped me in his arms, picking me up and opening the nearby closet door. My eyes widened as he spoke with a whisper.

"Don't move and don't make a sound. You'll regret it if you do." He then set me down and shut the closet door with me on the darker side of it.

I could hear his heavy boots make his way across the room. The loud creak of the front door let a mumbled voice make it's echo through the house. I couldn't hear anything but mumbles since the door in front of me was a thick one at that.

Uncomfortable with my position, I thought about moving, but then canceled the idea with remembering what he said to me. It played in my head a couple times. "Don't move and don't make a sound."

I looked at the opening at the bottom of the door and noticed the blanket that covered me was pinched under it. Trying to be as quiet as I could, I started to pull it slowly towards me. With one last hard tug, it pushed me into the back of the closet. I winced and tightly shut my eyes as I knew I had just made a mistake because I was now being buried in whatever it was that shared the darkness with me. I stayed completely still.

With that, I could hear silence outside of the door, and after a few moments had passed, heavier foot steps made their way towards me. I quickly covered my face with whatever it was had fallen on me and held my breathe as I heard the door swing open. Light peaked through some of the darkness I was under. My heart was racing in my ears but over it's vicious beats I could hear two clear voices; one I knew well, and one I found familiar in some way.

"It seems my clothes fell from the thunder rumbling" I heard Hozier say in a reassuring tone to the other person there hovering above my hidden body.

After what feels like a long moment of frightening silence, I hear the closet door slam close and the two step away from the door. From outside of the cabin I believe I hear a third voice yelling, but I couldn't make out what they said. Soon after, though, I hear something spoken in a low, deep tone from the stranger in the house. I press my ear against the door to get a clearer sound.

"I know you took it from me, and boy you know if you hide somethin' from me, yer gonna regret it big time."

I could hear Hozier speak in a somewhat cheery tone. "I don't know what you mea-"

Just then I heard skin to skin and a loud thump as the wooden floors vibrated with it. My heart began pounding again as my imagination ran endlessly in panic.

"I will be back, and you better have my shit ready."

The strangers heavy boots shook the floors as they exited. I held my breathe for a few minutes again, staying put in the dark closet. Waiting for something, anything.

Soon the darkness took over my mind and my breathing began to get heavier and quicker. What would have happened if that stranger had just moved this stuff off of me? I can just imagine the person grabbing me by my hair and pulling me out of the closet and .. what would he do then? Slit my throat for being an eavesdropper? He could have crushed my skull with his heavy feet, or even stomped on my rib cage.. What if that man was looking for me? And if so, why?

Hozier opens the closet door and pulls the jackets off of me, my tears greet him in horror as my mind is flooded with terrorring thoughts. He gets to his knees and I can see his cheek is already beginning to turn purple. He pulls me into his arms and he can feel my heart jump against his. I keep my hands up in a defense position, but I can't seem to push myself away from him. I feel frozen, but warm from his embrace. How can I feel so safe at a time like this?

We stay there in silence. His hands slowly rub my back as my body can't seem to relax, but I can tell he's trying to make sure I'm alright. I know he's telling me I'm safe, but I don't feel as though he will succeed in doing so.

He moves his head away and tries to look me in the eye. I can tell he's trying to smile without showing that he's in pain and worried but I can see right through him. I want to ask who that was. He said he was alone in these woods. If he was, then who the hell was that? And... why did they punch him?

I try to gain the confidence to speak, it takes me a few minutes, but I finally concur.

"Hozier.."

He looks at me as sweetly as he can in pain and softly asks me. "Yes?"

My mind panics and I back down on the main question and pass on to another one. "Does.. does it hurt?" I ask as I softly place my hand on his cheek. He winces and pulls away.

"No no" He chuckles in pain. "No, it's.. it's just a beauty mark."

I smile weakly and lay my head back on his shoulder without saying another word.

"Are you hurt?" He spits out.

"Oh.." I look across the room and see the strangers muddy foot prints leading to the still open door. I watch for a moment as some rain falls into the open doorway. He brings me back to the moment again by rubbing my back softly.

"I'm alright, some stuff fell on me but.."

He grabs me by the shoulders and looks me sternly in the eyes. I feel a little scared and over powered by this. "I told you not to make a sound." he spat out.

He holds my head against his chest and I can hear his panicking heartbeat. Why is it beating so fast?

"That almost turned into somethin' very ugly. Do y'know that?" He sounded so scared.

"I-I'm sorry.." I could feel the tears in my eyes welling and over flowing now in fear. I could feel my head becoming so hot, it felt as though it was internally on fire.

His hands continued to run up and down my back softly.

"Hozier, who was that?"
