A/N: So I was gonna do a deep dive on Colby and everything like that, but then my brain was like "what if you made an entire chapter about Brennen?" Um, so that's what I did. This is a bit of a tangent away from the regular story plotline but I thought it would be interesting. So I hope you like it.
Chapter 21
"Brennen?" He opened his eyes to see Bradlee leaning over him.
"Leave me 'lone" Brennen grumbled, turning to smoosh his face back into the couch pillows.
"Brennen, come on, it's like 1 in the afternoon"
"Shit, really?" Now wide awake, Brennen began to sit up and holy fuck, he should not have done that. It felt like someone was sawing his head in half.
"Fuck, I have a meeting, well I had a meeting at like 12. Fuck," He swore, beginning to swing his legs off the couch.
Before he was abruptly stopped by Bradlee pushing him backwards.
"Relax, it's fine I called and told them you weren't feeling well"
Brennen gave him a look that said: "how in the hell did you pull that off?"
"Told them I was your assistant," He said blithely, like that explained everything.
"Here," Bradlee thrust a cup of water and two ibuprofen tablets in front of his face. "Take these and then when you're ready, come into the kitchen. There's bacon." (A/N: I don't think either of them's a vegetarian, but if so they're not in this story lol)
Brennen made a face at him "Yes mother," but obediently took the glass and downed the pills before slumping back against the sofa.
"God, how much did I drink last night?"
"Well let's put it this way, that was full last night," Bradlee said, pointing to the mostly empty bottle of Captain Morgan. "I mean, I helped, but that was mostly all you."
"Well, that explains why it feels like there're miniature demons hacking away at my brain"
"Gross"
Brennen laughed as he heaved himself off the couch and moved unsteadily to the bathroom before heading to the kitchen.
As promised, Bradlee had cooked enough bacon for an army and there were scrambled eggs that weren't quite cool yet. Meaning that Bradlee had probably just finished cooking before waking him up.
The only mystery was how the hell he'd cooked without waking Brennen who was just one room over.
"Did you really cook all this?" Brennen asked sceptically as he fixed himself a plate before sliding into one of the chairs at Bradlee's tiny kitchen table.
"Is that really so hard to believe?"
Brennen shook his head, "No, it's just-uh, really nice of you I guess"
"Well, I did so you better eat it."
"Yes sir," Brennen said, giving Bradlee a two-fingered (and sloppy) salute before digging in. Of course, he knew Bradlee was a good cook, they'd had plenty of dinners at Bradlee's place, but this was exceptionally good. Maybe because of the hangover, actually, more than likely the hangover.
He watched as Bradlee fixed his own plate before taking a seat opposite him.
They ate in silence for a few moments before Bradlee cleared his throat.
"So, you wanna tell me what last night was about?"
"Not really," Brennen replied, suddenly finding his food very interesting.
