I wait at the front of the school, my eyes scanning the crowd for Evan. Evan Hansen. Evan, as in Evan-who-I-talked-to Evan. Evan, as in potential friend Evan. Evan, as in cute, nervous weirdo Evan.

I crush all thoughts of my possible, if real, incredibly small crush on Evan. I stand up straighter when I see him with the jackass from earlier. I walk over in a few strides, smiling. "Hey, Evan!"

Evan looks at me and tenses up, his eyes widening. I pause, the bounce in my step faltering. I frown as Jared gives Evan a cocky grin. "Did you move on from Zoe? Are you now crushing on the school drug addict?"

His words feel like lead in my stomach. School drug addict? I mean, I know my reputation is shit, but he just said that right in front of me. Evan pales, glaring at Jared. "No! I'm going to Y/n's for a project."

"Oh, so you still like Zoe, and you're using Y/n to get to her?" Jared asks, as if he plucked the doubts straight from my mind.

I turn my panicked gaze to Evan. "No! I-I'm going for the project. Only the project."

My eye drop to the floor as I force my feelings back down. "Oh well, try to be careful. Believe it or not, freaks come in all kinds of crazy."

Before I can open my mouth, he turns and walks away. "What is with that guy? I mean, what the fuck is wrong with him?" My tone is cold and full of an anger I wish away.

"Sorry about Jared... he's a dick. He's insensitive, but I think he's just kind of lonely..." Evan says quietly.

I nod, sighing. "Well, let's go." I mumble, walking ahead.

Evan follows me silently. "You still like Zoe?" My own words bring a small weight to my gut.

"Y-Yeah... Sorry if that's weird," he mumbles, rubbing the back of his neck.

I bite my lip to prevent myself from spilling information. "It's fine, just don't expect me to cheer you on if you kiss her." He nods, his face reddening. I look away as we walk in silence. "I'm sorry I pushed you earlier."

"Huh?" He looks at me, startled.

"Yeah, I was just mad... I didn't mean to hurt you. Actually," I laugh quietly. "I didn't know your arm was broken, so when I saw you in the computer lab, I sort of freaked out. And then I saw your arm, and I thought I did that to you.

He laughs quietly, a small smile on his lips. I gaze at him, fighting my own laugh. "Y-You thought you broke my arm?"

"Hey, you don't get to judge me, you fell out of a fucking tree!" I snicker.

His laughter increases as he pauses. "Y-You
know, that boy that made the dumb comment, Jared Kleinman, h-he called me an acorn!"

I choke on my laughter, doubling over. "An acorn? That's so—" I gasp between laughter.

After a moment, I look at Evan. "You realize that his initials are JK?" I ask seriously.

He only giggles, earning more laughter. After a few more minutes of being unable to breathe due to the laughter, we begin to walk again. I sigh with a smile, looking at the ground. When we arrive home, Cynthia is in the kitchen, cooking dinner.

I ignore her until she turns to us. She opens her mouth to speak, but whatever she had to say shifts into, "Y-You brought a guest?"

"He's my friend from school," I say, walking forwards again.

"Friend?" Her voice is full of a surprise I wish wasn't there.

"Yeah. Friend," I grumble, shoving my hands in my pockets.
