"Y/n's friend," Larry repeats slowly.

His gaze turns to me, his eyebrows raised. "Yes. My friend. You don't need to act so surprised. I'm not incapable of making a friend. Do you guys really think I'm that broken?"

"Oh, Y/n, that's not what we—" I cut Cynthia off, snapping.

"No, I know. I'm a fucking mistake, right? I remember what you said, Larry, when I attempted suicide. You know, that one time... when was it?" I ask sarcastically.

I turn my cold gaze to my family. "Oh, right. How could I forget? That one time in May, when I drove a car into a tree...? What was it that you said? Something about me just... 'wanting attention?'"

Before anybody else can speak, I press my hands against the table, my voice rising. "I know I'm a terrible person, I have issues! You don't need to remind me! None—None of you know what it feels like to be me... nobody knows what's going on in here." I tap my temple.

"I know I am such a damn fuck up! But—" I cut myself off as my gaze lands on Evan.

He's staring at the ground, his eyes glistening. I stop, panting. I take a turn to stare at each of my family members. "I'm sorry... that you feel that way," Cynthia says quietly. "We need to get you help...I..." She looks at Evan as well. "We'll continue this later... For now, let's just eat..." I forgot about the meal cooking on the stove.

I sit at the table, beside Evan, who looks more than apprehensive. "Sorry," I mutter. "You must think I'm even more terrifying than before."

"No, it's fine. I get it... I know what it's like to be neglected and awkward. And weird and left-out... I understand." He gives me a small smile.

I can't help the smile that tugs on my lips. I feel my cheeks warm up a bit as Cynthia sets the table. Larry doesn't speak, and neither does Zoe. I wonder if they know how they've treated me. Oh well, I know I do shitty things, too.

"Y/n—" I look up and meet Cynthia's gaze. "Do... do you want to go to the orchard? Evan," She turns to my friend. "You're more than welcome."

"Oh, uh, sure...! I'll ask my mom." As he smiles, I watch his hands clench into fists.

"I think it might be nice," I say, trying hard not to decline. If Evan will be there, I'll be there too. I haven't had a real friend in ages.

"Oh, great! This is amazing!" Her grin widens as she looks at my father and sister.

"Sure." Zoe shrugs. "Can I invite Alana?"

"Of course!" Cynthia smiles as Evan looks at me.

"Alana?" he whispers, face scrunched up.

"Yeah, she uh..."

"Let's go!" My mom leads us to the car. We drive to Alana's once Evan confirms that he can go with us.

"My mom is thrilled that I'm going out with you," Evan says, looking down. Going out. What an interesting way of putting it. "She's always telling me to put myself out there, and to her, this is a great first step."

"Does she know who I am? That I'm the school freak?" I ask.

"No," Evan mumbles. "But she doesn't need to know. We're friends, and that's that."

I smile at him as we arrive at Alana's. I make sure that Evan's not looking as Alana kisses Zoe's cheek. She sits beside her, leaving me and Evan in the back. I look out the window as we drive. We haven't been to the orchard in ages, I don't know what brought it up...

When we get there, it's dark and the stars are out, twinkling in the night sky. We slip past the fence with little difficulty and enter the abandoned field. I follow my parents to a spot under a tree. The tree, thanks to the recent rain, is still alive, similarly to the other acres of land in the orchard.
