Flying Lessons
Krissy
Krissy looked at her schedule. She groaned. Flying lessons. In the muggle world, Krissy used to ride a bike-not that she was very good at that.
She noticed a boy from Hufflepuff looking at her. What was his name? Krissy thought distractedly. Oh, right, Noah something.
“Hey.”
Krissy looked up and brushed her reddish brown hair out of her dark brown eyes. It was Caedis Alder. They hadn’t spoken in months ever since they’d had that fight right before Krissy moved away. Caedis had been the only wizard friend she had ever had before Hogwarts. Krissy was pretty sure she had a surprised expression on her face.
Caedis smiled. “I wanted to talk....about, you know...” she trailed off.
“Just forget it.”
Caedis pouted. “Hey! I just wanted to say...sorry. I need all the friends I can get here and Hermione Granger’s not helping that number.”
Krissy slowly let a smile creep onto her face. “She is annoying. Never seems to know when to shut her mouth. Friends?”
“Friends. Hey, who’s that staring at you?”
“Noah something. I think he’s in Hufflepuff.”
“Oh. So, what did you think of potions?”
“Snape is an evil little git. I can’t believe he gave us a ten minute lecture on paying attention after Potter didn’t know what question Snape had asked him. He’s barely here a week and already causing trouble for all of us!”
At the sound of laughter, Krissy whipped around. It was Caedis. She was clutching her stomach and laughing uncontrollably. People were stopping to stare at her. “I’m sorry,” Caedis said giggling, “Did you just call Snape little? He’s got a good two feet on me and I’m one of the tallest in our year.”
“Yeah well it’s just an expression! Seriously, you’d think people in this world had heard of expressions.” Krissy grumbled. Caedis finally pulled herself together and they started walking out onto the grounds again. “I wonder what flying lessons will be like?” Krissy asked questioningly. I hope I’ll be able to stay on the broom. I’ve never been on a broom before, have you?”
“To answer your first question: I don’t know. I doubt they’ll be teaching us to fly though,” Caedis answered sarcastically. Krissy hit her on the head with A History Of Magic.
They got there to see, with surprise that every other first year was there too. Caedis ran right over to where Zaelie Violet and Helena Reyes were standing. And as Zaelie ran to meet Caedis she tripped over a rock and fell on her face. A crowd of first years who could only be Slytherins snickered loudly at this. Krissy winced. It looked painful. Of course, if it wasn’t, why would the Slytherins laugh?
“Good Morning!” a loud voice boomed from the edge of the castle. “I am Madame Hooch and I will be teaching you how to fly. Everybody grab a broomstick.”
The first years all rushed forward to claim brooms. Of course, Krissy happened to be standing right next to the pile of broomsticks and nearly got trampled. At least she got a good broom though, if you could call any one of the school brooms “good”.
“Hey, watch this,” whispered Zaelie, who had ended up standing right next to Krissy.
“What? Are you going to fall again?”
Zaelie laughed. “I hope not. It’s highly likely though. Anyway, watch.” She whispered “Wingardium Leviosa” and pointed her wand at a blonde Slytherin girls broomstick.
The broom flew up and whacked the girl in the face. She shrieked. Now it was Zaelie and Krissy’s turn to snicker. The girl glared at Zaelie. “Her name’s Celine.” Zaelie told Krissy in a whisper. “She seems to hate me.”
“Now, everyone, to get your broom to become airborn, you must merely command it ‘Up!’,” Madame Hooch told the first years. There was a scattered yelling of the word “Up!”, but only a couple of people were able to get their brooms to fly into their hands on the first try. One of them was Harry Potter, another was a blonde Slytherin boy who was named....well, Krissy didn’t know yet. On her fifth try, Krissy was finally able to get her broom to fly into her hand. She heard a slapping sound next to her. It was Ron Weasley, and his broom had just flown up...and smacked him in the face. She let out a giggle.
“I’ve seen that happen before.” he groaned to Harry Potter, “Just not to me.”
When the entire class finally had gotten their brooms into their hand, Madame Hooch told them to mount their brooms and attempt at flying when she said 3. “1...2...-”
And Neville Longbottom was suddenly up in the air as his broom bucked him around like a bull and flew all over the place. And then he fell. Krissy flinched. She could hear the Slytherins laughing as Madame Hooch escorted Neville to the Hospital. She rounded on them, but someone had gotten their first.
Harry Potter was shouting something at the blonde boy Krissy had noticed earlier. The boy was holding a glass sphere and waving tauntingly at the Gryffindors. Krissy recognized it as the remembrall Neville had received at breakfast that morning.
Suddenly, the boy hopped on his broomstick and flew up into the sky. The students gasped.
“Come and get it Potter!” He taunted.
Harry jumped on his broom and with an amazing movement, flew up next to the blonde boy. “Thanks Malfoy, I think I will.” The whole of the first year was watching as the astounding events unfolded above them.
Malfoy threw the remembrall over in the direction of the castle. It was a very good throw, but nothing compared to Harry’s dive. He flew fifty or so feet down by a castle window and then he caught the it. “And that’s his first time on a broom?” she heard Ron mutter next to her. “Blimey, I’ve been practicing for years and I’m not that good.”
“I take back everything I said about him. I think I’m in love.” Caedis said in a dreamy daze, awestruck.
