The Trap Door

Lily

In the Hufflepuff common room, Lily James lay sprawled on the couch, playing with her curling blonde hair, not noticing the weird looks she got from her house mates. With her right leg hanging by the couch’s arm, she easily jumped over and landed crouched on the ground, making no noise, grinning madly. Lily straightened up, looked around the almost empty common room and skipped out the painting.

Roaming around the castle when nearly sunset was hardly appreciated. Skipping around the castle with “inappropriately worn uniform” was disregard. But Lily couldn’t help it. She hated the yellow and black tie wrapped so tightly around her collars so she always loosened them. She despised the button down blouse that had to be tucked in her skirt so she always let them out. And she was absolutely disgusted by the knee-length socks worn so she always wore her shoes without them. Sure she got plenty of detention throughout the year, but she figured it was worth it.

As Lily danced around the halls, she passed through the library and spotted a group of first year Gryffindors clustered around a table. A messy, raven haired boy sat in the middle, shaking his head and frowning. Yes, Harry Potter whom Lily had met on Halloween night when he faced the troll.

Vaguely curious, she twirled close to their table and Ron seemed to be the only person to notice her. “Look out,” he mumbled, although no one but Krissy paid attention. “There’s Creepy Lily. Her eyes are extra glowy today.” Krissy gave a slight giggle, but the others didn’t look up.

Lily heard Caedis say, “Harry Potter, I am going down with you to that cellar whether you like it or not. Even if you don’t want me to, I’ll still follow you.”

“Not unless we tie you to your bed,” Ron muttered.

“Shut up Ron. Harry, really understand. I already know the stuff, and I can take care of myself.”

Harry whisper, “Caedis, I’m just telling you, I don’t want you to come. It’s too dangerous information. We could get expelled.” Not particularly aware of what she was doing, Lily said, “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to get expelled.” Everyone jumped at the sound of her voice. “I’ve never been expelled you see. I was homeschooled. Mummy and Pa just stayed home with me and my brother. They didn’t like Muggles much. But I love Muggles. They’re so fascinating, and so nice.” With a look to Hermione, she smiled while her eyes wandered to the ceiling and no one could tell if she was actually talking to them or just talking to herself while standing in front of them.

“Hermione, you’re Muggle born aren’t you?” With a surprised expression, Hermione nodded. Finally looking down at her, Lily genuinely smiled. “You’re very smart.” Then she glanced at Harry, still smiling. “Harry,” she said. He looked at her, curiosity in his eyes. “I like your eyebrows.” And with that, she danced away, twisting between the bookshelves and dodging Madam Pince’s scolding. “No running in the library! Lily James, I will tell your professor!”

Lily could still hear the whispered voices of the group she’d just left behind. Ron’s voice stood out the most. “What did I tell you? Creepy!”

“She’s not that creepy Ron. She seems nice, kind of,” Hermione said hesitantly.

Caedis huffed, “She said she liked Harry’s eyebrows.”

“Which is a compliment! I think,” Hermione chided.

“She seems alright,” Harry mumbled.

“She’s a little weird, but she seems harmless. Like a little demented puppy,” whispered Krissy. Lily sighed. It’s so nice to have friends. Lily’s never really had friends, except her one year old brother and Mummy and Pa. She never went out and made Muggle friends, and so there was no chance for her to meet wizard friends. But she did meet a few friendly garden gnomes who spit at her and said very unpleasant things. Until this year, Lily’s only friends were those gnomes. Now she’s made friends with Harry Potter who had very nice eyebrows, Hermione Granger who’s hair Lily liked very much, and Ron Weasley who Lily thought his name was very interesting.
