A Christmas Story

Cassandra

Christmas was coming. White flakes flew around in fury and the ground was covered in a thick, wet blanket of white. And the twelve Christmas trees that had been set inside the great hall seemed to sparkle in a way.

But the fact that Christmas was coming was apparent to Cassandra more than anyone. She had just received a letter telling her that she would be spending the holidays at Hogwarts because her parents were off visiting relatives in Austria. Cassy hadn’t even thought about Christmas that much before the arrival of this letter, but now that it had come, it seemed as if Christmas was coming much more rapidly than she would have liked.

The day before the Christmas holidays had begun, Celine sidled up to her and started asking her questions about her father.

“So, are you going back home for Christmas?”

“Nope. My parents are in Austria visiting some relatives I’ve never heard of, but apparently, lots of my aunts and uncles live there.”

Celine looked confused for a minute, “I thought you were part Latin American.”

“Nooo, why would you think that?”

“Your last name is Moon, right?”

“Of course! You’ve heard me called Miss Moon by teachers for months.”

“How do you spell that?”

“M-O-O-N,” Cassandra said, now thoroughly confused, “What, did you think it was M-O-O-N-E or M -O -E -N or something else like that?”

“Something like that,” Celine muttered under her breath, “Is your father Rafael Moone, by any chance?”

“Him? I’ve never even met that guy. My father’s name is Edward Moon.”

“What’s your full first name?”

Cassandra looked at Celine incredulously, “You’ve known me for four months, I would think you’d know my full first name.”

“What is it!?”

“Cassandra.”

Celine stared at Cassandra for a second, a shocked expression on her face. “Are you kidding me? I’ve never even heard of you or your father! Well, goodbye, then!”

Celine stomped off in the other direction leaving Cassy looking stunned. Celine had just ditched her-permanently- just because her father wasn’t some important, influential person? Well then! This was a wonderful start to her holidays!

A shriek of laughter came from the other end of the hallway. “Not as smart as you thought, are you Celine?” Cassandra looked around. At the end of the hall Pansy Parkinson was laughing at Celine. “I can’t believe that you thought the she was Cascade Moone! Doesn’t look anything like her. And Cascade doesn’t even go to Hogwarts yet!” Celine had a look of uncontrollable rage on her face, and she stepped towards Pansy in a menacing way, her wand raised in her hand which was shaking with anger.

“Petrificus Totalus!” Pansy fell to the ground, paralyzed, a surprised look frozen on her face. Everyone in the hallway turned to look at Celine, but to Cassy’s and probably everyone else’s surprise, the sound hadn’t come out of Celine’s mouth. She looked around for the perpetrator. It was Lily James, standing alone with her wand still pointed towards Pansy, a wild glint in her eyes. Lily shook her head, her curly blonde hair flying wildly, and suddenly looked down at her wand, then over to where Pansy was lying on the floor. Lily looked very shocked, but somehow pleased.

Celine, Cassy, and Pansy’s friends were all looking shocked, but Lily looked very pleased with her work. “Wow,” she said in a slightly shaky voice as a smile crept onto her face. “I never thought-” Just then Mrs. Norris came prowling around the opposite corner. “Well, goodbye then, and you’re welcome!” Lily rushed off down the hallway and around the corner without Mrs. Norris sulking by it. Celine had followed her and everyone looked after the mysterious girl. “Who was that girl?” Cassandra heard people whisper. No one knew.
