Abandon

Zaelie

Zaelie was peacefully sitting in the Ravenclaw Common Room, when Padma Patil, another Ravenclaw first year, ran up to her, breathless. “Zaelie!” She panted, “Caedis...Alder...is...waiting...outside...for you.”

“Okay! Thanks!” The other Ravenclaw nodded, and collapsed in the seat Zaelie had stood up from.

Zaelie walked out of common room and down the stone staircase that led up to the Ravenclaw tower. She saw Caedis looking around and fidgeting at the bottom of it. “Hey, what’s going on? Padma said you wanted to see me.”  Caedis looked at her nervously.

“Umm, yeah. I wanted to, um, tell you something.”

“Well, what is it?”

“It’s about Celine.”

“What about her?”

“She’s going to do something to you. Something bad.”

“Why would she do something bad to me? Celine’s really nice.”

“Just saying what I heard.”

“Look, Celine’s my friend, I don’t care what you say.”

“I’m warning you, she’s going to-”

“Look Caedis, I don’t care what you heard. For all I know, you just made that all up because you don’t like Celine.” Another thought suddenly occurred to Zaelie. Something she hadn’t thought about in weeks. “And I think this is all about that bet we made on the train. You just can’t stand the thought of losing, can you?”

Caedis looked outraged. “This has nothing to do with that! Celine’s only pretending to be your friend! Look what happened to Cassandra!”

“I’m not even PUREBLOOD! That’s NOT going to happen to ME!”

“This has NOTHING to do with your blood status, Zaelie Violet!”

Then, Zaelie lost it. “You know what? I DON’T CARE what you have to say! You’re a liar Caedis Alder! I don’t know why the sorting hat didn’t just put you in SLYTHERIN.” she said harshly. Zaelie stomped up the stairs to Ravenclaw tower and shouted at the eagle knocker to let her in. Of course, it didn’t, so she had to answer the stupid question.

Zaelie shot dirty looks at anyone who even glanced at her as she sped up to the dormitory. It was empty. Zaelie slumped down on her bed and cursed Caedis to death.

The next few days, Zaelie avoided Caedis at every turn. And with avoiding Caedis came with the price of avoiding Helena too. Well, at first it seemed like a price, but of course Helena had to agree with Caedis about the Celine thing.

“Of course she would,” Zaelie grumbled one charms class to Padma Patil, who she had taken to hanging out with lately. “Helena and Caedis are both on the same side of the bet.”

Padma gave her a sympathetic look. “I don’t think Celine is faking her friendship with you. I’m sure Caedis’ll come around soon.”

“I doubt it.”

And Zaelie was right. Nothing changed by the next afternoon. Or the afternoon after that. Caedis still stuck by her crazy idea that Celine was going to abandon Zaelie.

“I can’t believe she said that!” Celine had gasped when Zaelie had finally found the time to tell her what Caedis had said. “I would never do that! Who does she think she is making up rumors like that!”

“That’s exactly what I said!” Zaelie had replied.

One morning, as she was walking to Transfiguration, Zaelie heard Caedis’ voice coming from through a the door to a classroom.
