"You're so stupid!" I say, storming away from him. "I did it for you." he interjects softly. I turn around and give him something just shy of a smile. "I never said you weren't sweet." he looks down and attempts a smile while kicking the dirt under his feet. "What you did was huge, Jexton. I don't know how I can meet up to that." he sighs and slowly begins to walk forward. "Hold my hand when you take your last breath." he requests and my heart sinks.
I am robbed of all words. How can somebody go from tricking you into a hostage cell to putting themselves in deaths way for you?
"I wish one of us knew where we were going." I say and I see Jexton nod out of the corner of my eye. "I know." he agrees and I sigh. "I'm really sorry I made you take your mask off." I say softly and Jexton stops walking. I stop a few feet ahead without turning around. "You didn't make me do anything." he says and I can't help but smile. I turn around, being sure to erase the smile beforehand.
"So you just put yourself on a death bed voluntarily?" I ask. "For a German?" he nods as if to say "Duh."
"For you." he reminds me and goosebumps cover every inch of my skin. I inhale deeply and nod. "Let's not just focus on the bad things, okay? Let's not worry about dying and keep our minds on what's important," he takes a few steps toward me as he talks. "our mission."
Boredom wraps itself around the both of us along with silence once again and we have nothing to talk about. Every now and then it's just random mentions about the trees or how we're going to do something or which way we should turn.
"At this rate, we're gonna get ourselves lost." I say and Jexton looks at me with a disappointed expression. I give him the "Sorry..." expression and we continue to walk. "We're not gonna get lost." he assures and I stay quiet. The last thing either of us needs is to get mad once again. We're a team now, and there's no use in ruining our chances together.
"It's getting dark, Jexton." I say softly and he steps closer to me as we continue to walk. "You getting cold?" he asks and I nod. He hands me his jacket and runs his fingers through his hair. "I'm a little hungry, too." I say and he looks at me before yanking his backpack off of his shoulders. We stop walking and the wind catches up to us.
"Ditto." he unzips the backpack and digs through it. He hands me a banana and he pulls out a bottle of water along with a packaged cookie. "What a great dinner." I say and hold the banana in the air. He does the same with his cookie and we both smile. We take turns drinking from the bottle and eating.
"We're gonna have to find somewhere to crash here soon." Jexton says when we finish eating. He places the water bottle back into his bag and helps me up when he stands. I nod and yawn; then he does the same. "I think it'd be best if we take turns sleeping." he says and I give him a confused look. "Just in case." he finishes and I nod. He's probably right, it would be the best for our safety.
We walk just a few more yards before we agree that it is time to get some sleep. Neither of us have gotten any rest for a whole day and night and we need to or else.
"You go ahead and sleep first. I'll watch out." Jexton says and I nod. He doesn't need to tell me twice that I get to sleep first. "Wake me up when you get tired." I say before closing my eyes. It only takes me a few moments to fall into a hard, peaceful sleep.
...
I hear static and Jexton's voice which wakes me up. I open my eyes to the sight of Jexton staring at me. He moves his arm quickly and shoves something in his bag. "Hey, I found a rabbit. You hungry?" he asks and I'm too out of it to care about what just happened. I sit up and breathe in. "Oh, gosh, that smells so good." I say and he smiles. He pulls the cooked rabbit meat off of the fire and hands it to me.
"You eat half then give the rest to me." he says and I nod. My mouth waters at the sight and smell of meat. When I take a bite, my eyes are forced shut and I take my time chewing. "Where would I be without you, Jexton?" I say and groan. He laughs and feeds more sticks to the fire.
"How'd you start a fire?" I ask and hand Jexton his half of the rabbit. "Well, you don't want to freeze to death, do you?" he asks and I smile. "Did you have a good rest?" he asks and I nod. I think I had a dream, but I don't really remember it." I say and he nods.
