I hear beeping and look around confusedly. "Farrah!" I hear a faint voice yell. I almost think it's my mother, but I know it's not.
"Farrah!" the voice yells again, this time a little closer. I begin to walk toward the sound, though I probably shouldn't. "Hello?" I yell and hear leaves crunching. I slowly walk forward and listen for the voice again. The beeping continues and I rub my arms.
I see the silhouette of a person and find that that is where the voice is coming from. Jexton.
I freeze and my eyes widen. How did he find me? I quickly spin and run in the opposite direction before he can see me. "Farrah! He yells and begins to run after me. I run out of breath and trip over a log and fall to the ground. He catches up to me and I know because I can hear his breathing next to me.
I try to stand and run, but I stumble and fall again. My legs are too shaky to support me. Jexton kneels by my side and places his hand on my arm. "Hey, stop." he says and I look at him. "Get away from me!" I scream and he stumbles back. "Listen to me, Farrah!" he says and I look up at him. He is holding my arm in place and he is too strong to sqirm away from.
"How did you find me?" I ask with fresh tears in my eyes. "Remember when you got shot in the arm back at the gates?" I nod and he slowly releases my arm. "It wasn't a bullet that struck you," he tosses a small gray tablet in front of me. It has a red dot pulsing in the center and I assume that it is my location. "it was a chip."
"What are you stalking me now?" he attempts a smile and shakes his head. "Look, I know how you're feeling right now. Believe it or not, I'm feeling the same way, too. But you have to realize that we're all each other has left. We can't separate, it's not good for either of us."
"How would you know what good for me, huh? For all I know, this could be another one of your tricks, and I'm not falling for it again." I try to back away from him, but he scoots closer. "Look, Farrah. My dad's dead now. How would I be able to trick you again? I wouldn't be crying if I wasn't serious about this." I shake my head and he wipes his face and sniffles. "Look, I understand completely if you hate me,"
"You killed my mother, you asshole!" I scream and feel my whole body shaking. "Your bitch of a mother killed my dad!" he screams back, his voice cracking and fresh tears flooding each of our faces.
My eyes widen and I gape. This all makes sense. Why he was doing this to me. How we feel. I look deeper into his face and begin to finally recognize him. "Your father was Thomas." I say and he looks down at the ground, nodding. "Yours was Darrel." he says slowly and calmly.
"Why did he do it?" I ask, referring to why his father took my father's discovery after my father saved his life and turned against everyone. Jexton sniffles and looks up. "I don't know. He told me that your dad infected my mom." he says and I gape and shake my head multiple times. "I didn't know my dad, but that's not true."
"I know that now." I sit up and stare at the ground. "Well, now that neither of us have parents." Jexton says, but doesn't finish. I nod and continue staring at the ground. "They were best friends, your father and mine."
"I know."
"So that's how he knew my name, then?" Jexton nods and I look up for a few moments.
"What are we gonna do now?" Jexton asks, sounding more helpless than ever. I shrug and sniffle, wiping my eyes. "I'll be gone here soon. So you can do whatever." I say and he looks up. "No you won't." he says and I slightly tilt my head in confusion.
"That necklace you wore all the time," he begins and I look down at my chest hoping to see the necklace, but then I remember that he yanked it off of me and broke it. I look up again and nod. "Did you ever know what that liquid was? What it was used for?" I shake my head and he lifts his sleeve to reveal his bicep once again. He points to a small dot on his skin. "Vaccine. That liquid is used for the prevention shot."
