Ren's POV
"Where are we gonna take her?" I ask Jexton, who is holding Farrah's unconscious body. He has scratches on his arms and forehead, and they are bleeding. The bridge of his nose is a bluish-purple color indicating that it may be broken.
Jexton shakes his head and tosses her up a little to re-position her body in his arms. "I don't know, but it has to be away from here." he replies and I sigh.
"Why did we have to knock her out?" I ask and he looks down at me. "Because, if she was awake, then she wouldn't agree to this."
I nod my head and continue walking alongside Jexton. I feel horrible about doing this to Farrah, but by the things Jexton has said about her, and the way he said them, made her sound like such a horrid person.
I place my arm around Halten's shoulders and he looks up at me. I look over at my mom and step dad, and they smile at me and Halten. I'm happy that we're all together again. After we found Ander dead in the garage, we knew that Farrah wasn't really who she said she was. This was all her fault.
"Is she gonna die?" Halten asks and Jexton glaces down at him. He sighs and nods, then looks up again. After a few moments of silence, he speaks.
"Yes, eventually."
"How?" Halten never fails to ask a lot of questions. Jexton doesn't answer. Instead, he sighs and tosses Farrah up again to re-position her in his arms.
"Are you gonna kill her?" Halten asks and Jexton glares down at him. "Is that why you knocked her out? So she wouldn't feel it when you kill her?"
"I'm not gonna kill her." Jexton spits. "She's tainted."
"She's infected?" my mom asks with a shocked and concerned expression. Jexton nods and stares at the road ahead of us.
I never thought that things would end up the way they did. When I met Farrah, I sensed something fortifying about her. I knew there was something wrong, but I played it off because I didn't want her to suspect anything. She and I both knew that she was being looked for, and I couldn't step in the way of that. Better to keep her in our sight than to let her lose again.
I figured I should take it easy, considering I knew how hesitant she was with trust. I could see it in her face. I didn't want her to know that Halten and I knew who Jexton was. I could tell that him and Farrah had been through quite a bit together.
I wonder to myself what it was that kept the two together, though. I'm sure Farrah had tried anything and everything to get away from Jexton, and the mess that he had gotten her into. There is no doubting they have been through situations that could have cost either of them their lives, and many times, that is.
Part of me hoped Farrah would wake up and fight her way out of Jexton's arms, then run away from us. It wants her to get away from us- from here, and to be safe and by herself. But the other part hopes she dies in her sleep. The things Farrah has done are not fixable. She put our community in fear and distraught. She put many lives in danger, and got countless people killed. She has done nothing but damage the entire time she has been here, and she needs to be rid of for it.
"Why don't we take her back to the Consilium and let the soldiers deal with her?" I suggest and Jexton glares at me. He shifts Farrah's weight in his arms for the fifth time since silence broke through us. He shakes his head and sighs.
"As much as she deserves that, she doesn't." he says and my family and I tilt our heads at our new community leader. "What?" I ask and he swallows and clears his throat before speaking again.
"She's already dying from the disease, and all they'll do is torture her. She saved my life, so I'm gonna put her out of her misery peacefully." Jexton says and I stop walking. Everyone stops a few feet ahead and turns around. "Is that even possible?" I ask and Jexton nods. "Very much so."
Silence creeps up on us once again and I continue to wonder where we are going. Jexton seems to have a pretty good idea, because he makes all the right pathways and turns at the right time, it seems. No one bothers asking anymore.
No one knows what's coming.
Jexton's POV
"Okay, we're here." I say loudly, kneeling in front of a river brook and gently lying Farrah on the dry ground. I turn around and glance at the Osling family, noticing that they are eyeing me in confusion.
"Why a river?" Jonah asks and I turn to face the muddy body of water once again. I look down at Farrah, shrug and sigh. "Because," I say and place my hand over my pocket. I caress the small, metal machinery and wet my lips. I pull the small gun from my pocket at the same time that Farrah opens her eyes and does the same. "river's are beautiful." I finish and we stand simultaneously and aim our weapons at the Osling's. They freeze and throw their hands up, backing away.
"What the hell?" Jonah's voice cracks and Halten begins to cry.
"Get on the ground." Farrah demands, aiming her gun at Henley. The small family does as they are told and keep their hands in the air. "Please," Henley begs. "you don't have to do this."
"Put all your weapons in front of you." I command and they, once again, do as they are told.
Farrah and I look at each other simultaneously, then back at the helpless family. Farrah whistles and tilts her head up. Ren quickly stands to her feet and places her hand on her back pocket. She nods at Farrah, then runs over to Jonah and jabs a pocket knife into the back of his head. He falls to the ground and Henley screams. "Ren!" she lunges forward and grabs the knife in front of her, but before she can do anything, Farrah shoots her.
By the end of it all, Halten is screaming and his cheeks, along with Ren's, are tear soaked. We could not get him to agree to this, but he knew it had to be done anyway. We did not want him to have to witness this, but if we would not have killed Henley and Jonah, Farrah, Ren, Halten and I would be dead.
That was the plan all along. We were all supposed to die, and they were sent to do the dirty work.
It's true, all of our names were, and still are, on the wanted list, but we took care of everything before it could take care of us. In all reality, we were just trying to stop the bad from happening, and we somehow did. We got far enough away from the community so that we could not be found again.
I guess sometimes the only way to solve a problem is to kill it off. And by killing it off, we managed to figure out a way to stop all of this for good.
The only way to make things in this world right again, is to get a little fresh blood on your hands.
And that's what kills the virus.
