We run for some time until we find ourselves at the gates of the Consilium community. Jexton moves to enter, but I hesitate. "Come on, Farrah, we have to. If you wanna live." he tries to encourage me but I back away. "I want to go home." I cry. He steps toward me and looks me in the eyes.
"One shot, then we're out," he takes step closer and holds his hand out. "promise." I don't grab his hand, because I still don't trust him. Why I'm coming back to the place I was brutally imprisoned in is something I am still unsure of myself. Jexton lowers his hand and nods. "Please trust me." he says and I move my head to make him think I nodded when I actually didn't.
We enter the gates as if nothing was wrong. "Jexton?" a woman calls and my heart sinks. I feel out of place; as the only person I know here is Jexton, and that's the last thing I wanted. "Hey, Missy." Jexton calls back with a shy wave.
"Where's your father?" the woman's voice gets closer as she accelerates toward us. "Why is there blood on you? And who is this?" the woman, who I believe I heard Jexton say her name is Missy, looks between the two of us with a disgusted look on her face.
I stand there awkwardly as Jexton explains everything that had just happened with a few lies in between. Missy asks me a few questions and I answer them as truthfully as possible; and lie only when I need to. She asks us what we're doing back and he told her that I need treatment. She let's us off with a warning and tells us that if we leave again, we're not allowed to come back. We nod and Jexotn leads me to the medical center.
When we enter the small building, Jexton talks to the nurse for a few moments and I feel nervous watching him explain everything to her since I cannot hear a single word they're saying. When their five minute conversation is finally over, she lets us in.
The woman sits me on the small white table and tells Jexton to clean himself off. She carefully cleans and bandages my wounds after cleaning me of the blood and dirt that stain my body. She slaps the arm opposite of the one with the microchip I had been shot with when I was last here with Jexton which made me flinch, and the raw skin dangerously stung. She then cleans my arm with a disinfectant wipe and walks over to a small tank full of blue liquid—the same liquid that was in my necklace I assume, and fills a syringe with it.
Finally, I am injected with a needle into my arm and I grit my teeth and squeeze my eyes shut. I don't know why it hurts me so much, but it does.
When the procedure is finally over, I stand from the table and press my hand against the newly bandaged hole in my arm. "Don't touch it." the nurse, whose name tag reads Judy, demands. My arm quickly falls to my side and I find myself looking for Jexton. "Let's get out of here." I mumble and he nods. I quickly thank the nurse and Jexton and I practically run out of the building.
"We can stay here and live, or we can get some supplies and head out." Jexton says and I have to think about what would be the best for me. Doing either of the two, I would be in danger. However, staying here, I would have a bed to sleep in, I think, food to eat everyday, and I may have a chance at going to school again.
Leaving, I would have unlimited freedom, have to find food when I run out, I wouldn't have another chance at education which wouldn't bother me because I haven't gone to school since I was five, and I would have to find something comfortable enough to sleep on.
"I think we should take some stuff and go." I state my opinion and Jexton seems to be more for it than I am. He nods and leads me to various buildings; collecting items such as blankets, clothing, food, water and a few notebooks and pencils, then we were on our way. We made sure that Missy wasn't anywhere near as we both knew she would give us an earful if she saw us leaving.
"Where could we go?" Jexton asks and I look over at him then back to the ground. "We could go to my old house," I suggest and I can feel his eyes on me. "it's not far from here, and it has three bedrooms." he nods and agrees that that's where we should go. At least we'll have beds to sleep in, a table to eat at and a roof over our heads.
Jexton hands me an apple and granola bar as we begin walking. I take a bite of the apple and enjoy the sweet, watery taste. "We should head back to the CDC." he says and I stop walking and look at him. "Why?" I ask with a mouthful.
"Did you not notice all those guns and stuff that was just sitting there?" he asks and I nod and begin walking again. "Oh." is all I say and he coughs. "We're gonna need something to protect ourselves from crazy people." he says and I mentally agree with him.
We head off into the same direction that we took last time we left the gated community, and somehow remembered each and every step and turn along the way.
