Hearing Jexton's mother admit such a thing sent me over the edge. I threw my fork on the table and stood quickly, making my chair slide a few inches behind me. "Farrah—"
"You should know that your husband's lying dead outside. I hope you have a great time cleaning that up." I interrupt her and storm out of the room leaving Karen's jaw on the floor and her cheeks tear-soaked.
"Farrah!" Jexton calls after me but I ignore him. He catches up to me and grabs my arm. "Farrah," he says and I look up at him with a scrunched brow.
"How could you keep this from me? Just when I was starting to let myself trust you, you do this all over again."
"Farrah, I didn't want you to find out like this." he says and my mouth drops. "Like this? What do you mean like this? You mean you didn't want me to find out at all. Why did you lie about her in the first place?" Jexton sighs and releases his grip from my arm.
"Look, I promise. There's no more lies. I have nothing else to hide from you." Jexton pleads. "How do I know that, Jexton? That woman just admitted to planning that whole thing with kidnapping me and you didn't react at all. Not only am I mad that you lied to me about your mom, but you lied to me about everything in between."
"I know, I know. And I'm sorry! About everything. I swear this is it. You know everything." I roll my eyes and walk away from him.
"Guys!" Karen calls after us and I stop walking while Jexton turns around. "You can't leave." she says. "Why not?" Jexton asks and I laugh. "You came in, you've been detected. You know the soldiers have been looking all over for you two."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Jexton calls out to her and I stay facing the door. "They'll be on their way if I notify them."
"Why would you do that?" Jexton interjects angrily. "Because I'm apart of the community and it's my job, honey." just then, I turn around and storm in her direction. She backs away a couple steps and I stop when I'm only a few feet away from her.
"Don't call him honey, you sick bitch. You're not a mother to him. You're a rotten hell bound psychopath who needs to shut her goddamn mouth before—"
"Before what, sweetie?" she taunts me and the fire that is my anger ignites. I turn to Jexton, whose eyes are widened, he looks between the two of us and makes the courageous walk to me.
"Seems as if your girlfriend is threatening me, baby." Karen says with a smile, then a fake frown. It takes everything in me to not pounce on her. I turn to Jexton, who is glaring at his mother, and breathe deeply. "Let her," I say and grab him by his arm. "let's go." Jexton shakes his head and allows me to drag him to the exit.
"I don't want to tolerate her talking to you like that." Jexton says through his teeth and I nod. "Don't even turn around." I say and we walk to the doors and try to open them, but they're locked. Jexton slams his fists into the glass and turns around. "Damn it!" he yells and his voice echoes throughout the entire building.
He storms back in the direction of his mother and she backs away scarcely. "Unlock the fucking doors." he demands. "I can't. I notified the soldiers. They'll be here soon. I can't let either of you leave." Jexton takes another step toward his mother and she backs away again.
"You don't want to do this." he warns and she stares at him expressionlessly. "And what can you do?" she asks and he glares at her. I'm sure to keep my distance. I try to figure another escape plan as they talk.
And as they talk, I walk around the wide and empty room. I walk down the shower hall and search the rooms for supplies. I find a bag and stuff it with some clothes and other things that I find will be useful when I get out of here.
"Where the hell did she go?" I hear Karen's voice yell and my heart and stomach drop. I hear her high heels click against the tile floor and look around for a way out without her seeing me. I mentally beg Jexton to distract her while I figure something out. I step out into the hallway and run in the opposite direction just as she turns the corner. I hope she doesn't see me as I make a U-turn and find Jexton standing by himself next to the exit doors.
"We need to get out of here." I say and he notices the bag on my shoulders. I shake my head and ask him if he knows where the control center is and he nods. He leads me up a flight of stairs and to a large room with lots of computers and glowing multi-colored gadgets.
"Which one is it?" I ask and Jexton shrugs. "We have to shut the cameras off." he says quietly and runs his hands over a series of buttons. An alarm sounds and we flinch. Worry flashes over the both of us and just as Jexton finds the right buttons and presses them, Karen finds us in the room and yells at us. She holds a rifle up and points it at me. Jexton yells and jumps in front of me. He runs to his mother and shoves her to the ground just as the gun goes off.
I run to them and grab the gun that has been tossed to the left of the two. I grab it and point it at Jexton's mother. Jexton rolls himself off of her and I step on her chest. Tears free fall from my eyes as she tries to stand.
"You bitch." I mumble and my hand shakes violently as I pull the trigger and Karen stops moving. I drop the gun and kneel by Jexton's side. His breathing catches. "Don't." I whisper and my tears fall onto his bleeding torso.
I hear heavy footsteps make their way up the stairs and I know exactly who it is: the Consilium soldiers. "What do I do?" I quietly ask Jexton and he tries to sit up. "Close the door." he breathes. "lock it." he manages to say and I nod and help him move out of the door way. I do as he says, and just as I shut and lock the door, the soldiers start banging on it. Jexton heavily breathes as he sits himself up against the wall and presses his hand against his wound.
"We need to get out of here." he says and coughs.
