Psychiatrist? A psycho!

These words often go hand in hand. Society infers only psychopaths visit psychiatrists. Society infers it is not normal to seek help. Well, society. Is. Wrong.

People experience life. Everyone goes through various adversities of life, everyone fights different battles; some are prolonged, some are short and intense, some are traumatizing; some are won, some are lost, but every battles leaves a scar behind. And these scars make each person different than the other. Amidst battling through life, people often lose themselves. And to get back on their best self, they need help. Whether it is from family, friends, or professionals. And that is okay.

I've come across various reasons to why people choose not to seek help.

1) They don't realise that they need help.

Well I'd say, let them be. Everyone has a different pace in their lives and that is completely okay. If you know such person, just be with them. Don't catch them while they are falling because they need to fall down in order to stand up; but help them get back on their feet.

2) Those who dislike taking medication.

If you're one of them, understand that medications will only help you get better and they aren't life long for psychiatric problems.

3) They think nobody understands them and takes the issues as a joke.

I can relate to this one at some point but I'd say that we THINK people don't understand us, but some do try to. Not everyone has the same mental equilibrium, and we need to understand that. Sometimes people do try to understand us but its us who misinterprets the situation. That is okay because we are humans and we have emotions, but I hope you pause before making a judgement next time and understand that you do have somebody that values your emotions and understands you.

There are other factors too of course. I just mentioned some very common factors and if you relate to them, I want you to know that people are out there who are willing to help you out. You always have a choice and don't give up on yourself and humanity. The world will come to an end when people would stop believing in humanity. Its rare, but it exists.

I want you to know that society will always downgrade you, it will always criticize you. Now that's something out of your control, but what you can do is take care of yourself. There is always someone out there to whom you matter.

So do not give up.

Seeking help doesn't make you weak. In fact, it is a step ahead on being responsible towards your life; it is the door enlightening self-discovery.
