Melody Young

The Assistant

On Monday I was late for work. Fudge must have knocked my phone on the floor because it somehow ended up under the bed and I didn't hear my alarm going off this morning. I got dressed as quickly as I could and made my way to the office. When I got there I went up to the 8th floor and rushed to the office at the end of the hallway. When I got there I knocked on the door and it was yanked open from the other side by a girl that I'd never seen before but she didn't look too happy to see me.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"Melody...Mr. Ball's new assistant." I answered. She looked me up and down once and then again and I watched as some of the annoyance wash away from her face. She stepped to the side and allowed me into the office. Mr. Ball was sitting back in his chair and looked just as annoyed as the girl who'd answered the door.

"I'm sorry, did I uh...interrupt-"

"No," she said giving a face of pure disgust.

I looked over at him and he was shaking his head. "you ain't stop nothing but an argument." he said.

"oh," I said. He looked me over once more.

"The iPad," he said.

"Shit," I didn't mean to curse but he'd made me realize that I'd left the damn thing on my bed accidentally.

"nick," the girl said.

"What," he replied curtly.

"can you call me a car home," she said. "I'm ready to go."

"Melody," he called out to me. I looked over at him and he was holding a phone out to me. "call her a car."

"yes sir," he handed me the phone and I went out into the hallway. I don't know why I did that. I could have just stayed in the room but something about the atmosphere in that room was making me uncomfortable. I called the car for her and she didn't even wait for the driver as soon as I walked into the room she walked right passed me and left.

"she seems nice," I said to him. He gave a small laugh and rolled his eyes.

"my ass," he said.

"um, so I take it that's not your girlfriend."

He shook his head. "she's my fiancé actually."

"oh," was all that I could think to say. I figured that they might have been in some kind of failing relationship or a situation ship of some kind but I would have never guessed that she was a fiancé. They didn't seem like they liked each other at all.

After his fiancé, whose name is Hannah, left he put me to work showing me everything that I needed to know about being his assistant. What he liked what he didn't like and everything that he expected of me. One thing I noticed was that he had a lot of appointments very close together that were labeled as nothing more than 'wedding shit'. The rest of the day was spent going through the ins and outs of his schedule but he didn't have much scheduled.

When he told me that I had to be available all hours of the day and night during the week he wasn't joking. that night he called me in the middle of the night to remind me to add a meeting to his schedule that I already had there. Tuesday, he kept me at the office until 11:30 because I forgot to make sure to remind him about the expense reports that he had to check.

"it was your fuck up not mine, so if I gotta stay to finish this shit then so do you." He replied.

I don't understand why we had to stay so late. He is the boss after all. He could have just pushed the deadline back another day and we could have finished them the next morning, but that wouldn't have worked because there was a board meeting first thing the next morning, then he had a dentist appointment, then lunch with his mother, and after that, he was a meeting with his fiancé.
