The Announcement

Melody Young

The invitation to the engagement party was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Reading my name on the inside of the invitation was rattling to me. My name doesn't belong on something like this, written in gold letters asking everyone to come and share in this joyous occasion with us. Honestly, up until not I didn't know that engagement parties were a thing. The only marriage announcement I've ever seen has been over Facebook.

"Are you on your way?" Kirsnick asked through the phone.

"Yes, I'm leaving the salon now. I just have to get dressed and I'll be on my way." I replied.

"So, you still gotta go home?" he asked. "Why didn't you bring your dress to the salon? You could have got dressed there."

I rolled my eyes. "Can you chill out?"

"You were supposed to be here 30 minutes ago." he said.

"But somebody made me late to my hair appointment. If i would have been on time I would be there." I said. I was only late because of him, so if he was going to be mad at anyone, it should be him.

He huffed. "You set the appointment, but it's my fault you're late.?"

"Because you decided this morning that you were going to get a retwist, and instead of dropping me off you had me go without because you swore that you would be done in time-"

"Okay, fine." he said quickly. That party had been going on for almost an hour and he couldn't make his entrance without me in attendance and he was trying to get antsy. I got back to my house and ran inside to get my dress and shoes. I got dressed as quickly as I could before getting back into the car and sat back as the driver got me back to where the engagement party was being held. We pulled up in front of the restaurant and there were people hanging around outside. Kirsnick rented out the entire restaurant so that only people that were there were those who are there for us.

Kiari, my old supervisor, was waiting for me on the curb outside. He led me into the restaurant through a door that led directly into the kitchen. At this point most of the people he knew had seen me before because I went everywhere with him as his assistant. I found him standing in the kitchen near the door.

"You ready?" he asked as I approached him

"i don't know," I said. "How many people are in there?"

"My uncle invited like 100 people." he answered. "It was just supposed to be close family and friends. I don't know about you but I know I don't have this many damn friends."

"I'm nervous." I admitted to him. I was wearing heels so I didn't have to work hard to look through the window on the swinging door to the restaurant that was full of people. Kiari slipped passed us and went into the dining room. A few moments later I heard the room go quiet and I could hear his uncle talking over the room. Ever so faintly I could hear him say 'please join me in welcoming our guests of honor this evening, my nephew Kirsnick Ball and his soon to be wife, Melody Young.'

After that there was applause, and Kirsnick grabbed my hand and led me through the door and into the dining room. We were greeted by a bunch of smiling places and smiles that were definitely forced. There was a scowl or two from some of the women we walked past but I dismissed them as nothing more than a few office groupies. This whole thing was kind of weird and honestly a little shady. They've been waiting over an hour at this point for us to come into the party and I could tell that some of these smiles were forced, but I expect nothing more in this situation. Most of these people haven't seen me more than twice so this entire party is kind of out of left field.
