The Big Day
Melody Young
The next couple of weeks went by in the blink of an eye. Everything was planned out from the colors we were wearing to the silverware that we were going to be eating with at the reception. 200 people were sitting at the chairs positioned in the courtyard where we were holding both the ceremony and the reception. Everything was beautiful.
"This is a movie. I'm playing the role of the bride and nick is the groom." I said to myself as I looked in the mirror. I was in the room by myself making sure my hair was in place and my lashes were on straight. It took me about an hour to get them right, and they were still looked crooked. There was a knock on the door and it was opened from the other side. Kirsnick's mom stuck her head into the room as asked me if I was ready.
"Yes ma'am," I replied. I grabbed as much of the dress as I could in my hands and made my way out of the room. I didn't pick this dress, if I would have I woulda picked something shorter. I wrang my hand around the handle of the bouquet as I followed behind the line of bridesmaids and groomsman as they made their way down the aisle.
I kept my eyes on the arch as I made my way down the aisle. We rehearsed this the night before but this was so different now that all the seats were full. Everyone was watching me with smiles on their faces as I walked down the aisle.
"You look nervous," kirsnick asked when he met me halfway down the aisle. I nodded and we proceeded to the alter. I've never seen it done like this but because I have no family and nearly no friends, we had to tailor the wedding party and walks to fit accordingly.
"you're making it worse," I whispered back before the priest started to speak.
I had to keep my eyes on him because I didn't want to look at anyone. Kirsnick stood there smiling back at me and giving me the goofy look like he was actually in love or something. I continued to play the part of the blushing bride as we recited our vows. Kirsnick gave me a quick kiss on the lips while the spectators clapped. After the actual ceremony I was taken back to the room where I was given a chance to change into the dress that I had picked out for the reception.
Kirsnick and I were sitting away from everyone else at our own table and every now and then someone would come by and shake hands and wish us luck on a happy marriage. This felt cruel; these people brought gifts and they really believe the story that we told them. They think that we're nothing more than a true tale of love at first sight instead of just a big lie.
"You don't look very happy." he said to me. I looked over and it had just dawned on me that I had been looking around the room scowling.
"How can I be, look at all that stuff they bought us." I pointed to the table of gifts. "They think that we're an honest couple."
"You can think about it like that," he said to me.
"Then how should I think about it?"
"You worked at a strip club, right?" he asked me.
"Yeah," I answered.
"You gotta think like a hoe." he said. "Think about the goal instead of focusing on your morals."
"What?" I asked him.
"If it makes you feel any better, we won't keep the gifts. We can donate them or give them away."
I nodded and sat back in the chair I was in.
Kirsnick Ball
I could tell that this whole thing has been getting to Melody over the next few weeks. She's not a bad person, and I know that participating in this is a lot for her. When she was at work, she did exactly what was expected from her. In her private life she was a model citizen. She never broke a law, always followed the rules, and stayed to herself. Then I came along. For the most part she's been handling it surprisingly well but sometimes you can tell.
She smiled for the pictures and handled being the center of attention very well for someone who naturally shied away from the limelight. We got through the ceremony with no problem even though she was standing at the alter looking like she wanted to disappear.
She looked like a real-life Cinderella, and when she was smiling, she looked like she was really happy. When it was time, we got up and moved to the middle of the dancefloor for our first dance. Melody picked the song; I don't know the name of it but it was one that she liked a lot. The song wasn't one that I was familiar with, but it seemed to calm her. The entire day she had been so nervous but there wasn't much that I could do because the wedding planners insisted on us being as far away from each other as the property would allow. She held on to me tight as we swayed from side to side while the photographers took pictures and all the guests watched.
The rest of the party was kind of a blur for me. It almost felt like a regular party and not an elaborate and well-planned scheme. When it was all over, we got into a limbo and everyone saw us off.
"it's finally over," she said leaning back against the seat.
"Yeah, finally." I replied.
"I'm assuming we're not going back home." she said looking over at me.
"I got us a beach house." I replied. "But don't think of it as a honeymoon, consider it a vacation. We can sleep and relax for five days."
"Hmm, that doesn't sound bad." she replied.
"Yup, you get your own room on one side of the house so you can pretend that you're all alone for five whole days." I said.
"And what are you going to do?" she asked.
"I'm gonna sleep for five days." I said. "I don't want to be boring but I'm only coming out of my room to eat."
"Shit, that sounds like a plan." She replied with a laugh.
