“But father, you promised that we could finally go spar…”

“My dear… Other clans need to see me. I can’t put it off,” he frowned, kneeling down so that he was on my level. “You know that I wouldn’t go if I didn’t absolutely have to, love.”

“…When you get back can we spar?”

            “Of course, Ayamei. I promise.”

I stepped forward and hugged him as tightly as my eight-year-old body could handle, and as I did he slowly stood, lifting me up with him. As such a little kid, I looked up to my father like he was a hero.

“How about this- when I get back, we can finally start gathering materials for your kodachi-katana set. Is that a good enough proposal for my little girl?”

“Yeah!” My eyes went wide with excitement, lighting up. “How long will you be gone?”

“About four days. That’s not too long, right?”

I just nodded, smiling, before he set me safely back down on the ground. “Thank-you, father.”

“Anything for my little one. You keep your mother and cousins company, alright? Maybe you can spar with your mother or Ryu? Your mother could teach you technique, and you know Ryu loves sparring with you.”

“Okay!” I nodded again, still smiling widely up at my father. He reached down with his gentle hand and ruffled my hair, chuckling a bit as I made haste in fixing it and smoothing it back down.

He turned and walked towards my mother and embraced her, that warm beam still in his face. “Ryuka, my dear… Stay safe. I mentioned to Ayamei that you might teach her some technique.”

            “She is but eight, Harato.”

“All the more reason to teach her now, while she’s young. She is smarter and stronger than you might think, dear.” He grinned, glancing over his shoulder at me before finally stepping back from my mother. “At the first sign of danger, run.”

Mother nodded, walking with my father until she was standing behind me; she placed her hand on my shoulder and my father continued off.

“Hm. Your structure is strong for such a young lady,” Father complimented, blocking my strike and leaping back. “For a woman of barely twelve years, even with a bamboo sword you seem to have a good grip on battle.”
