The wind rushed against my face as I ran, reaching inhuman speed. I climbed up a tree, taking a deep breathe, and then moving from tree to tree using the branches as bridges. The sun was particularly strong that afternoon as it beat down.
It was by no means a warm day, though- it was, after all, winter. Most of the snow had already melted away, though there were a few patches remaining. Deep down I was hoping for another heavy snow; I didn’t exactly mind the cold, and snow was just pretty.
Mid-leap, I spotted a flash of silver from the corner of my eye. Eyes widening, I drew my kodachi and held it in front of me, blocking the incoming sword. I was thrown off track, landing gracefully on the ground instead of on the tree I was leaping towards. I just looked around for a moment and, hearing the maniacal laughing, sighed with relief and sheathed my weapon. “Jeez, Ryu. Don’t scare me like that.”
“Shoulda seen the look on your face!”
“Shaddap,” I smirked at the figure approaching from the shadows. He held his hand up and I did the same. When he was within range, our hands collided in a quite strong high-five. “Been a while, Ryu.”
“Yeah. Sorry about that. Then again, you were the one who told me and Tsume to go back.”
“With good reason. Leaving the manor unguarded was kind of stupid considering our history,” I shrugged at him. “And speaking of guarding the manor, what are you doing here?”
“Well, I wanted to see how you were. One dependable guard, plus the tons of minor guards, are more than enough for that place. Especially since we’re all demons- even if the minor guards have the thinnest demon blood around. You seem to forget that we live on the top of a mountain. The chances of them getting to the top of a mountain without being spotted by at least one of our guards is pretty much none.”
“I guess you have a point.”
“So? How are you?”
“I’m alright. How about you? And the manor…?”
“I’m doing pretty good, and the manor’s in pristine condition. We’ve been waiting for you to return, you know. You’re due a visit.”
“Yeah, I know. Getting there is a chore, though. I’ll visit soon enough.”
“Tsume misses you. Him and the new housekeeper- Shiori, I think her name is- have been dying to cook a meal for you.” His smile grew wider; it was a sight that I had honestly grown to miss. “Besides… You’re family. Just leaving and not visiting seems kinda… wrong, y’know?”
“I know, I know. I’ll try to get up there as soon as I get the chance. I’ll send a letter or something before I depart, though.”
