Ballads of a Ballroom Romance

I dance
I twirl and swirl
Bare feet gliding gracefully across the floor
I am alone
A light focuses on me
A tangled storm of skirts and hair
Faster and faster
I spin and glide
My eyes are closed
Music is played by phantoms in the corner
Higher
Louder
Faster
Stronger
Beautiful
I open my eyes
The room is full of people
Slower
The music plays slower
The people dance gracefully
Across the ballroom floor
Coat tails and skirts twirl
Around graceful legs
I am out of place here
Surrounded by a storm
Of people
Controlled chaos
Around a single dancer
Who has never danced
Before today
A hand
My hand in his
Dancing
Slowly we dance
Surrounded by people
I close my eyes
Savoring the moment
Open
Eyes open to shadows
Of people who never were
An empty ballroom
Devoid of people
Music fades away
As the phantoms of my memory
Realise I am alone
Standing in a room
That once seemed so full
When all along it was empty
And quiet
So quiet
So empty
So still
I dance
I twirl and swirl
Panting I try
To recreate the magic
That once was
But I have never been a dancer
