harry walked through his front door after his tiring walk home from school, he took his shoes off in the hallway, knowing his mother already had enough to clean, even if they did split it evenly.
harry did the dusting, washing and drying clothes and sweeping the kitchen, whereas his mum hoovered, washed up and cleaned the bathroom.
"i'm home!", he called out, his mum had usually just gotten home by the time he did, sometimes she wasn't there yet but she was only behind him by a few minutes.
he walked into the kitchen to make himself a cup of tea before going to his room when he saw his mother sat at the kitchen table, paperwork all around her while she had her head in her hands. and she had already taken her work uniform off.
"mummy? what's happened?"
harry knew that calling her mummy always cheered her up slightly.
he sat down opposite her and took her hands into his.
she lifted her head and sighed.
"got fired this morning, i didn't want to worry you at school so i waited to tell you"
no wonder she looked so stressed harry thought, she didn't particularly enjoy the job, but she was secure enough in her 9 to 5 that it payed the bills and she didn't have to worry. it was a small town, there weren't many job opportunities. especially since she'd had the job since harry was small, it'd be hard to start again like that.
obviously, harry immediately knew what to say.
"don't worry, i've been thinking about getting a job for a while now, i'm 17 after all, i can get a job after school and on weekends while you figure everything out. we've already got the single - parent benefits so we can survive in that too until you manage to find somewhere else to work. why'd they fire you anyway?"
"couldn't afford to keep so many staff, they let me go of all people. i've been there bloody 14 years!", she cried, lowering her head, harry didn't let go of her hands though, just stroked his thumb on the back of her hand and waited for her to calm down.
"we'll be fine, don't worry about it honestly. just inform the people you need to inform, like the people in charge of our benefits, and maybe even see if we're entitled to anything more now, i'll start job hunting, and you can relax for a while. you've earned it after 14 years anyway", he smiled, letting go of her hands and leaning over the table still covered in letters to hug her.
"thankyou baba, you always know what to say", she whispered into his hair.
"maybe i got it from you", he laughed.
he got up and moved all the paperwork into a neater looking pile before walking over to the kettle.
"tea?"
