Chapter II (Edited)

"Why?" I cried, dropping my head to stare at the blood that oozed between my fingers where they applied pressure to his gaping wound. Tears continued to drip down my cheeks at the sight of my deathly-pale best friend who lay so still before me.

If he didn't get help soon, he would die.

"Because you care for him." Jake spits venomously, and I flinch at the hatred that drips from his voice.

"He doesn't deserve to die!" I scream lifting my head to glare at the bitter man who watched me with dark eyes.

"Maybe not, but he would have protected you." He sneered, and my head reared back at his words – eyes widening as he stepped closer.

"Protected me?" I questioned uncertainly as he took another step towards me.

"Yes, he would have tried to stop me from doing what was needed." Growling, he shot forward and I scrambled away, fear making my heart pound as he lunged towards me.

My back hit the bars of a cage as I backed away, my hands grappling the floor to move out of the way of the lunging knife. A whimper broke free as Jake stalked towards my hunched form. His eyes blazed with a deep hatred as he eyed my position, his hand flexing around the shape blade.

"Jake, please." A hesitant voice calls and my head snaps towards one of the quieter prisoners who always spoke to me in gentle tones.

His hesitant blue eyes briefly dropped to where I hunched against the bars before they lifted to face Jake. I saw the way his small body trembled in fear of the bitter man. Shock rippled across me as I realised that he was trying to defend me, even with the clear size difference between him and Jake.

Not to mention the knife clasped in his hand.

Brian was only a youngling and barely reached Jake's shoulder's in height, and even though Jake had started to lose his muscle mass he was still almost double the width of the hesitant youngling. Whilst Jake was all pale with blue eyes and blonde hair - Brian was all dark with sun-kissed skin, black hair and warm, dark brown eyes.

"Don't even think about its youngling." Jake snapped, and Brian stumbled back from the force of his word's. Jake turned to glare at all of the standing men who had been watching everything transpire. "If any of you say anything about what just happened, I won't hesitate to kill you. Think about your families and how much you want to get home." He warned and I watched desolately as the others backed away – hesitation clear in their awkward steps.

I didn't blame them for not defending me, as I knew they all just wanted to get home to their families.

Satisfied no one would get involved, Jake spun back around to face me, his eyes glowing with malice as he saw me inching away.

My breaths thickened as I froze beneath his heavy gaze.

"Why try to run, knowing you deserve to die for the torment you have caused us all." He growled as he ran at me, blood dripping from the glinting metal.

Brandon's blood.

Scrambling away from the bars, I clambered to my feet and slowly backed away as he turned to face me.

"I never hurt any of you! I am as much a prisoner as the rest of you.' I pleaded, trying to make him see the truth. But still, he continued to stalk me, his heavy footfalls in tune with my thumping heart.

I knew I must have been getting closer to the wall behind me, so I chanced a quick glance behind to see I was right.

I can't escape him.
