A/n: Hello and welcome. I don't have much to say today, just that the first bit of this chapter I can't fully decide if it's cute or cringey, so I might end up revising it more later on, but for now I don't really know what to do with it LMAO
Enjoy (if you can ;-;)!
My eyes flew open to be greeted, not with the blood-stained walls of my cell, but with the harsh light of... the sun? Oh my God, I hadn't seen the sun in years! I sat up and looked down at myself. I had on a black bodysuit with a brownish-red jacket and pair of boots. There was something on my face, too. I pulled the object off and examined it. It was a mask. Why on earth was I wearing a mask? An intense feeling of dread tugged at my heart. This wasn't some kind of test from the scientists, was it?I quickly looked over my shoulder to find that my wings were there, intact. Not at their fullest, but still pretty big. I tried flapping them a few times, and sure enough, my feet gently lifted off the ground. I landed back on the bright sands of... wherever I was and looked around. There didn't seem to be any creepy science guys around. I couldn't stop the smile from spreading across my face.
Can it be real? Am I finally free?
I pinched myself, just to be sure I wasn't dreaming, but to be honest... I didn't really get good dreams.
"Hey, uh, miss? Are you alright?"
I inhaled sharply. I had been found. I turned around to see a dark-haired boy wearing some kind of odd suit and a cape. His eyes widened upon seeing me.
"No way... Caitlin!? You have wings!? Where were you? Gone for five whole years. I just—Wh-what happened to you, Caitie?"
My heart stopped. The only person on this Earth who ever called me that was—
"Dick?" My voice was just barely above a whisper. After all this time, he was here. I could already feel the tears sliding down my cheeks as I stumbled towards him. Hesitantly, I reached up and removed his mask.
I was overjoyed to see two very blue eyes staring back down at me with such kindness I couldn't begin to describe.
We quickly wrapped each other up into a tight hug, something I'd been needing for a long time. My shoulders shook with sobs as Dick whispered words of comfort in my ear.
"It was so awful." My sobs had died down, but my voice was still shaky, and my breathing was still uneven. "They, they would cut off my wings and rip out my fangs, I—"
"Woah, Woah, Woah, slow down. Who hurt you?"
"It was—well, it's a lot to—I just—I can't believe it's over! It's over, right? This is real?"
"Shh, It's alright. I'm here. I'm real. And I swear on my life that no one will ever lay a finger on you ever again, okay?"
I nodded into his chest and exhaled a content sigh of relief. I was here. I was safe.
Suddenly, his head snapped up from where it was resting on my head, and he released me from the hug. He gently took his mask out of my hands and placed it back on his face.
"I assume you have that mask for a reason." Dick gestured to the mask I still had in my hand. "I suggest you put it on, now follow me," He took my hand and led me to a hiding place up in one of the rocks just as soldiers on a jeep passed over the spot where we had been hugging each other just moments before. As instructed, I slid my mask back on and watched the soldiers ride away.
"Those are Bialyan Republican Army uniforms. But what are Bialyans doing in, uh..." He pulled up a map with our location on it on his wrist computer. "...Biyala? Ok, better question—what are we doing in Biyala?" He looked at the time at the bottom of the screen. "In September? What happened to March?"
