A/n: Okay sooo there's actually no Robin/Gle interaction in this chapter, but you do get to join our favorite girls on a fun night out, and more importantly I finally get to tell the full story of how Batman and Robin found Gale in the lab >:) that's been one of my favorite parts in this story to write, so enjoy!
"Oh, look. Zombie Captain Marvel, that's... hilarious." Zatanna's voice was the first thing Caitlin heard upon entering the cave. Today was October 31st: Halloween—Caitlin's first Halloween to be exact. The high school Connor and M'Gann went to was having a dance for the occasion, and M'Gann had invited the whole team (plus Zatanna) to attend.
Caitlin was excited, to say the least. Robin and Aqualad had a mandatory meeting with Batman and Red Tornado that evening, so Caitlin was a little bummed they couldn't make it, but she was pumped to be spending time with the friends that could come.
"Is the Justice League having a party? 'Cause my dad didn't mention it..." Zatanna asked as Caitlin stepped up behind her and Artemis, waving a silent 'hello' to everyone so as to not interrupt the conversation.
"No, no, no, no! See, I..." Marvel scratched the back of his head... confused and a little hurt the team seemed so happy to send him off to another party... that didn't even exist. "Fine! I'm going trick-or-treating." He flew over to the zeta tube. "And I'm not sharing my candy!'
And then he was gone.
Caitlin blinked. That was... odd. She sighed and turned back toward Artemis and Zatanna. She opened her mouth to compliment them both on their costumes, but M'Gann's giggling interrupted her. The three turned to see the Martian wrapping Connor's arm up in some costume bandages.
"So... how long have Connor and Megan been a couple?" Zatanna leaned in, asking her friends.
Artemis laughed. "Couple? No. They're not a..." She looked back over at the two before finishing her sentence. Maybe she'd missed something...?
M'Gann was giggling again, leaning in closer to Connor. "Will you please stop fidgeting?"
Connor looked up, practically gazing into her eyes, grinning. "You are so making this up to me later."
Caitlin watched Artemis's face fall. Yikes... she thought Artemis knew. Hell, it was so obvious. Aqualad and Robin knew. Caitlin was surprised Artemis hadn't seen it sooner.
Artemis just felt... betrayed, and frankly a little stupid. She thought M'Gann was her friend. So why hadn't she told her about Connor? Was she keeping secrets? She hated that... Suddenly she didn't really feel like partying.
Artemis abruptly turned on her heel and started back toward the zeta tube. Caitlin and Zatanna shared a worried glance before hurrying after her.
"Ugh... I-I-I'm sorry, it just seemed so obvious." Zatanna said.
"Yeah! Honestly, Arty, if I knew you didn't know I would've told you sooner!"
Artemis kept walking.
"What about the dance?" Caitlin called after her.
Artemis stopped. She turned away and crossed her arms. "Not in the mood. Of course, sitting at home with my mom doesn't sound any more appealing..."
"Well, there is another option." Zatanna grinned. She chanted a spell, and suddenly the three of them were out of their Halloween costumes and into their hero suits. "Girl's night out."
Artemis and Caitlin looked down at themselves, then at each other. Artemis smirked. Sounded like a plan to her.
Caitlin was a little bummed that her first Halloween was essentially canceled, but one of her best friends needed her, and besides, the original goal of tonight was to hang with her friends. At least those plans hadn't really changed.
