I met Jay 3 years ago. My mother and I moved to the area when my parents seperated so I was pretty bummed to have to go to a whole new school and start a whole new life. My school was only down the road from my house so the walk wasn't very long, but I decided to take the journey through the park.
The park was small and quiet. There were a few benches and a few trees surrounding a small play area where there would usually be two or three families. The park had a bench that was sort of secluded from the rest of the park and was located behind this large bush with purple flowers and a large bird cage. After a boring first day at my new school I went and sat there for a while and thought about various things, including my brother.
When my mother and I moved, my brother didn't come with us. He was finishing his army camp near our old house and then he would move here and teach the new recruits. I was the closest to my brother in this world, he was my best friend and my guardian. Mother wasn't the same since her divorce, she was always so disconnected, as if she didn't even care.
I went to the park on my first day of school and pulled out my phone and started scrolling up and down my text messages ad selectively replying to my old best friends and a text from my brother asking how my first day at school was. My phone suddenly started flashing and the screen eventually went blank. I rolled my eyes and let out a loud groan (no one could hear me anyway). My phone done this quite a bit, as far as usefulness goes, I might as well have had a brick in my hand.
"Are you alright there?" I heard a voice say from behind me. I turned to see a tall, handsome guy behind me, wearing a thick jacket and stylish trainers, his hair was dark and fell effortlessly over his brow and his brown eyes stared at me with intensity.
"Y- Yeah, its just my stupid phone" I said, looking down at the phone in my hand that was now dead.
"I have the same one" Said the guy, holding it up, it looked worse than mine, battered up as if it had been thrown at a wall a couple of times. "Do you mind if I try and fix it?"
I shrugged and handed him the phone. I watched nervously as he began to take my phone apart. I didn't really trust anyone around here yet so I was cautious. Not that I could run after him anyway, he looked pretty athletic.
A few seconds later a familiar tone started to play from my phone, my ringtone. "How did you do that?" I asked, amazed as if he had just performed heart surgery on himself.
"Battery pull, works everytime" He smiled "Someone's calling you, Shaun?"
I took the phone from his hand and was just about to answer it stopped ringing. "I'll just call back" I said to the guy "Thank you er..." I paused. I didn't know his name yet.
"Jay" He said. "I haven't seen you around before er..."
"Zoe, My mum and I just moved here actually" I replied.
"Well then, welcome to our tiny town. Nothing much ever happens here" Jay said. I actually believed him. This place was quiet and I hardly saw anyone out after 7pm, it was like they were all scared of the dark or something.
"I like it that way!" I replied.
"Anyway, I'll let you get back to calling your boyfriend then..." Said Jay. Smooth.
"He's my brother actually" I replied. Flattered that this guy was showing me some attention. "He's in the army." I was so proud of my brother, he was so brave and wonderful and I would take up any opportunity to talk about him and to boast about the fact that I have the most amazing brother on earth.
"Wow, I want to join the army too" Jay replied. He sat next to me on the bench "When I finish school that is."
"Really? And do you have a back up plan?" I asked.
