As if moving house and having all of my stuff in boxes wasn't enough, I now had a date to worry about. I had never been the type of girl to fuss about what she wanted to wear, it was always a matter of picking up the first thing I touched when I opened my wardrobe.
This was different.
I settled with a blue dress, cute and not revealing. I definitely didn't want to give him the wrong idea.
I started to apply my foundation and the rest of my face when I found that I was sweating like a pig. This was so unlike me! I got up and walked to the window to open it but I stopped midway. There was definitely someone there.
"Hey!" I shouted, I must have caught the person off guard because after a loud ruffle I saw them fall straight down. "Oi!" I shouted again.
It was a guy, I couldn't see his face but it was definitely a guy. He looked up at me for a millisecond before he ran away. I was going to shout but I stopped myself. There was no point. It's not like he was going to stop for a conversation.
"Zo, you ready?" My mum called from downstairs. "Your date is already here!"
I mustn't have heard the doorbell. I panicked and told her I was coming. I definitely couldn't leave Jay downstairs with my mum for too long, she may be a professional woman but she is still my mother.
I grabbed my purse and went downstairs to find Jay in a smart shirt and dark coloured jeans. I could smell him too, even though I was on a different side of the room.
"You look wonderful sweetheart."My mum said.
"You really do." Jay said, quiet enough for me to hear. I smiled. I was actually blushing.
"Thank you, We should go now. I have my keys mum" I said, attempting to rush out of the door.
"I'll drop her home, don't worry" Jay said to my mum. She smiled at him and warned us to not be later that 10pm.
"You have a beautiful family." Jay said during dinner.
"It's only my mum, you haven't met my brother yet!"
"If he's like you, I'm sure we will get on just fine" Jay said. He was actually so nice. H had been nothing but a gentleman all evening, holding doors open, pulling my chair out for me and he even insisted on paying for dinner. I paid for half though, I hated the idea of someone paying for me or doing anything for me that I could do by myself. I said that to Jay.
"Even if I am doing it to be a gentleman?" Jay said.
"A gentleman would understand that he is on a date with an independent lady"
Jay laughed. "You're quite stubborn aren't you? I let you pay half didn't I?"
We got to my door and stood there for a while. This was always the awkward moment in the movies, where the guy usually kisses the girl or they stand awkwardly and say bye and avoid each other the next day.
Instead, Jay looked at me straight in the eyes. "I don't want this evening to end."
"Me too"
"You are seriously the most awesome chick I have ever met."
I blushed. "Thank you, you're not too bad yourself"
"Lunch tomorrow?" Jay asked. He was looking straight into my eyes. I wanted to push my lips against his so badly but I stopped myself. Was it possible to like someone this much already?
The next day at school I walked into the lunch area with a tray full of food looking around for Jay. I saw him walk in with a group of people, he saw me and continued to walk. A small part of me died a little bit. Was I a one night thing? I wanted to slap myself. I didn't even kiss him, how could it be a one night thing?
I took my food and sat on a table in front of me on my own. I started to eat when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Hey" Jay said.
"Hi" I replied. Blunt and annoyed.
"What's wrong?"
"Why are you ignoring me when you're with your groupies?" I asked, feeling my throat starting to clump up a little.
Jay sighed and sat down next to me. "It's not you, it's them"
"They don't approve of me?"
"No, they get involved, people get involved and that's how relationships die around here, especially seeing as we have only been on one date."
"How do you expect us to go on more if you hide me?" I asked.
"If I tell them, people will gossip, spread rumours and get involved, do you want that?" Jay asked.
I thought about this, he did have a point.
"Listen Zoe, I'll tell them, but let's go on a few more dates first? How about after school today?"
I agreed. He was making sense, high school kids can be jerks. There is never anything more exciting than a new couple in school, especially if the couple involved the most talked about guy in school anyway. I told him I was waiting until the day he could actually hold my hand in the corridors rather than walk past me like I didn't exist.
He told everyone two weeks later. We saw each other everyday for the two weeks after the day in the lunch area, after school we went to the movies or hung out at my place. That day I was sitting for lunch with some girls from my French lessons when Jay walked straight over to me. I panicked, my heart was drumming in my chest. He sat opposite me and looked at the girls.
"Hi Girls, I'm Jay. Can I borrow your friend for a few seconds please?"
The girls looked completely dumbstruck and none of them moved a muscle for 5 seconds.
"Okay Thanks" Jay said. He took my hand and walked me towards his group of friends. Everyone was looking at us now, speaking in hushed tones like we were in a lesson or something. We walked up to his friends.
"Guys, this is Zoe"
One of the guys looked at me "Um, hi"
Jay looked at me. "And I am hoping that Zoe will be my girlfriend."
My knees were going to give up underneath me. There was a simultaneous gasp from everyone in the lunch area. I looked around at everyone staring, all eyes on me. That's what made me most nervous.
"Are you sure?" I whispered stupidly.
Jay nodded. Everyone was staring at me in anticipation. I closed my eyes, tried to imagine we were alone and said yes. Then I heard applause. I opened my eyes to see everyone clapping and celebrating for us. Jay took me straight into his arms and kissed me. I was expecting hard showy kiss but it was soft, gentle and so loving. I kissed him back automatically, still in shock about what happened. Jay broke free and whispered in my ear.
"I told you I would tell everyone"
