I do have a car of my own, but it's off the road at the moment. there's a few little things wrong with it which I can fix at some point, but other than that it's ready to go. All I need to get back behind the wheel is a shitload of money.
Yes... Car insurance.
In the meantime, I ride a racing bike. I've got it up to 45mph, which is so fucking fun... just awesome. But I'm sick of cycling. It's fucking dangerous.
People keep overtaking me only to take a turning right in front of me... They pass and then cut me up...? What the fuck is the point of that?
The other thing is that before I even think about adjusting my position on the road, I always check over my shoulder. Pothole ahead? Shoulder check.
I found myself doing a shoulder check while pushing a shopping trolly today.
The shoulder check is cos bikes are so damn slow... 45 is my top speed, but I'm usually doing somewhere between 12 and 20, which is slow as fuck. Cars are overtaking me all the time, or worse, they don't have the balls to overtake so they just sneak along behind me.
There's the odd electric car sneaking around now too. Driving along in complete silence, right behind me, just waiting for me to do anything without a shoulder check first.
When I get a good downhill bit, or heavy traffic, I always make the most of it and pedal like bloody fuck.
That's when cycling is safe, when you're breaking the speed limits and overtaking trucks. Its safer cos you only have to think about what's in front of you. If you're going faster than everyone else, you can just forget about the cars you overtake, leaving you to deal with stuff you can actually see.
Honestly, every time I hear a car coming up to overtake I wonder wether it's gonna be that fucking guy who decides to brush past me... or the guy who starts indicating left after he's past me. (indicating he's gonna turn in my direction, across my path)
I recommend cycling to those who have a death wish or enjoy getting intimate with road surfaces, and rubbing little bits of gravel inside their skin.
Oh, and also to those who are skint and need cheap/free transport.
When I get this shitload of money, I'm gonna be looking out for cyclists and leaving them room.
