"No!" Maribel and Saphie shouted in chorus. What are they talking about?

"But he's really attractive," Saphie's cousin, Claire, whines.

They roll their eyes."But he's a jerk,"

"Who?" I ask. I'm very confused.

"Eli." they say.

I forgot that they loathed Eli. Their parents despised his parents, like mine did. Except their family did a whole lot better in trying to get their distaste onto their children.

"Oh, continue," I say

Claire still looks hopeful. "But he just looks so perfect."

"Yes but he's not a perfect person." Saphie explains.

"I don"t care," Claire states.

"Believe me," Maribel persuades. "He's awful."

Have you ever had one of those moments where you found it too funny to speak? Where you were certain you would laugh? This is one of those moments. I mean, I've been talking to him a lot in the last few weeks. Plus, he actually saw how wrong it was that my father wanted me to be be with Derek. When I told Saphie, she just shrugged it off.

I couln't help but laugh. I cover my mouth with my hand to muffle the laughter. Maribel, Saphie, and Claire whip their head's around to see me.

"What are you laughing about?" Saphie asks.

I have to think fast.

"Uh..." I mutter. "A joke gone stale!" I added a little laughter on the end to make it seem more real.

"Okay..."Maribel says.

Crisis avoided!

The girls resume their conversation about Eli. I tune out as to avoid another crisis. I add an occasional nod to make it seem like I'm listening.

I sit there pretending to listen but then something dawns on me. It was like a ton of bricks. Why do I care? Why do I feel I need to defend him?

Something at the back of my mind told me why. Aira, you like him. But I refuse. I can't. This won't happen.
