It's still processing. I don't want to believe it's true. She's my mother. She can't leave me. I love her.

I hear a quiet knock on my door. I walk over to see who it is and it's my father.

"Aira, we need to talk," he says.

"Okay?" I draw it out like a question.

"I want to make this the best eight months of your mother's life," he explains. "I want you to stay cheerful as much as possible. Your mother is to be happy at all times."

"Yes Father," I reply, nodding vigorously. I don't want to let either of them down.

"Also you must start cooking," he says as he walks out.

Great, I'm an awful cook. The only time I would ever cook was with Mother. But I will learn. That might take a few tries, though.

"Hurry, get the fire extinguisher," my friend, Maribel, shouts.

I grab it and put out the flames. I was trying to cook a simple meal. Maribel was here to help.

"Gosh, you're a terrible cook!" Maribel exclaims.

"Way to make me feel better," I say, my voice dripping sarcasm.

"Sorry," she apologizes. " Remember how bad I was at sewing?"

"Definitely," I tell her. Maribel is gifted in the kitchen but with a string and a needle she gets a little clumsy.

"What I am I going to do for dinner?" I ask.

"I'll cook it!" Maribel volunteers.

"Can I help?" I ask jokingly.

"No," she retorts. "Never again."

"Fine," I sigh.

Maribel ended up cooking a really good meal. She had to leave right after.

After the meal, my mother says,"Robert, could you leave the room for a second?"

My father leaves the room quickly.

"Aira, honey, I saw your kitchen fiasco," my mother reveals.

"Mother, I-" I try to explain but she cuts me off.

"I found it humorous and touching. I'm so happy you would try and help me" she tells me. "But, please, leave me to the kitchen work. I actually like it."

I smile. "I don't know what to say." Gah, I sound like a sappy greeting card. Wait did I say that outloud?

"You did," Mother tells me. "A terrible, cheesy, vintage greeting card."

We laugh. These are the moments I want to remember.
