I slide Derek's ring off my finger. The big diamond shines on my dresser. I'm meeting Eli today and it would feel weird wearing someone else's ring.

When I see Eli, I walk coolly over to him even though I'm bubbling with excitement. He looks like he's glowing.

"Hello, Aira," he says with a chirp in his voice.

"Hello,Eli," I say trying to match his enthusiasm.

"Let me just get straight to the point," he lowers down unto one knee. "I love you. Please, marry me!"

"Yes!" I shout.

We embrace and he plants a kiss on my cheek. I turn my head and I can't say what happens next because a lady never kisses and tells. But I'm pretty sure you can guess.

I heard the clock in the local church strike three. "I have to go," I tell him. "I'll see you at the wedding."

"Don't be late!" he teases.

Later, when I'm in my room, a wave of sadness hits me. No matter what I do I will lose someone I love. I can't escape my fate. I either get married to Eli and almost certainly risk being disowned by my father. Or I marry Derek and lose Eli. There's so much to lose.
