They set up camp for the night. They lost some supplies in the river so there was no tent and no dry clothes for Martha. John lit the gathered firewood not too far from the bank where they'd set up. On the floor coconut leaves provided a layer of dryness and warmth from the icy cold chill and the biting of the wind that night. Martha snuggled closer to the fire in order to dry herself while John made a tin of canned beans. Luckily he carried the food.
They ate the beans and drank luke warm water before turning in for the night. John stood guard for half the night while Martha slept peacefully. At 2am Martha would switch places while her husband slept for a while.
The sun hit John's eyes instantaneously waking him. He sprung to his feet looking for Martha but she had been patrolling further ahead in hopes that she could have gotten a heads up incase of any problems.John and Martha packed and left in a hurry leaving an empty can of beans beside the dying fire. A few minutes later a creature stumbled upon the camp and picked up the trail of the couple as it followed stealthily. Further up river John and Martha had made it accross to the other side continuing their journey to the mid mountain ranger station. By this time a light sprinkle of water graced both their heads as it escalated into a full shower. Thunder and lightening added to the already difficult journey they started. Now the dirt turned to mud as they made it to the beginning of the trail at the foot of the mountain.
John lost his footing, falling on his chest, his heavy bag added to the weight while he was smothered in mud. Martha helped him to his feet and began the climb again. More carefully they trod, taking it slowly and cautiously. They came across a small cave, inside seemed quiet so they entered in attempts to shelter from the rain outside. There seemed to be no end to this weather, Martha grew impatient since she hated playing the waiting game. She began to explore while John tried his best to clean himself from the mud on his body. Further into the cave bore strange drawings on the wall, some could be interpreted as a battle of man againt some giant creature, but the creature looked faded as if it weren't even there. Further evidence of this was that only a few of the men in the drawings threw spears while the others stood in one place as if they saw nothing.
Upon further investigation into the cave, Martha stumbled upon a giant door. There were symbols around the door as if it were there to act as a seal. Martha pondered this for a while before a gust of wind hit her face. She noticed the door had already been cracked opened so she had to take a look. Inside was an even bigger cave but empty and dark.
"What if this cave was the resting place of the beast in the drawing, And they never managed to kill it but trap it here to seal it away?" she thought to herself
Her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps coming towards her direction. John who had been calling and looking for her finally stumbled into her startling her for a moment.
" did you see the drawings on the wall? We need to get out of here at once!" he explained.
There was a sudden knock and an echo. Then came a swarm of strange little insects coming towards them. They both took off, running towards the entrance. By the time they made it, the heavy rain had been subsided. They made their way running up the trail slipping and grasping branches and vines on their way up until they were sure they were in the clear.
"What was that? John asked.
" I don't know but we need to find out what's going on and quickly" Martha replied.
The rest of the trail was even tougher. Branches of trees entangled with vines, Uprooted trees from the seemingly bad weather, land slides and a patch of poison ivy that diverted them almost around quarter of a mile into the mountain. The next couple of feet were easier but the chill of the wind bit with no remorse luckily John came with his coat. He gave the coat to his wife since her supplies were swept away by the river and he stayed without.
He began rubbung his palms together and blowing into it as as means of remaining warm. They were almost at the station, just a few more minutes in the already headed direction. John knew by the wind and the dimming of the sky that they needed to get inside and fast. They hurried as the night sky was almost upon them, the moon already out. They reached the ranger station but the lights were off seemingly abandoned with a padlock on the front door. They went around looking for something to break the lock or most likely another way in, maybe a window or another door. Martha found a hatch at the back of the building already covered in snow but she noticed the slightly pertruding handle as she got closer.
She called her husband at once.
"John!, I found something" she yelled
John came running,
"you found a way in?" he asked
"Yes I did, or at least I think so," she responded.
John noticed the hatch and knew it was a maintenence entrance that led inside. He went in first in case of any danger then he would signal to Martha once the inside was clear. At the bottom of the ladder he looked around before disappearing into the darkness. After being down there a while he finally gave the signal that the place was clear. Martha then proceeded to climb down, closing the lid behind her.
