... "why am I here?," he asked.
Scared and confused he trembled imagining the inevitable.
"we just saved your life that's why" the voice replied,
"so why don't I feel safe?,"Mr Johnson responded.
"do you wanna go back out there or do you even know what's going on?, " the voice asked
"no I don't know what's going on I don't even know how I got to the city!" Mr Johnson explained again.
"Outside isn't safe right now, if they see you....., "the voice was now interrupted.
"sir they spotted us" another voice shouted.
As Mr Johnson listened he could hear the sound of an aircraft flying overhead as the van sped along. Shots were fired at the van and Mr Johnson ducked. A back tire had blown and the driver swerved loosing control in the melee. Bodies were thrown around like puppets as the van overturned and Mr Johnson was thrown out the back door as the vehicle bounced and slid off a destroyed bridge.
The bag over Mr Johnson's head had flown off and upon trying to get up, discovered a knife had been stuck in his leg during the accident. A sharp pain also struck his left arm. Upon inspection he discovered that it had been twisted the opposite direction, most likely broken from the elbow. There was blood everywhere, his clothes, the persons on the floor beside him then a figure appeared and cut him loose. A feild medic saw the accident and rushed over to offer medical care.
Mr Johnson told the medic that he needed to get back to the country to find his wife. The medic had told Mr Johnson that he would be committing suicide in trying to get back out there. But he just had to try. After administering medicine and pain killers, he snapped Mr Johnson's arm back in place and wrapped it tightly in hopes to heal it properly. Mr Johnson reached for the knife lodged in his leg and threatened to kill the medic if he tried to stop him.
He ran towards an abandoned 4x4 off-road van off the bridge and engaged the ignition. He sped off in hopes to reach his wife and see that she was safe in their home. If he had followed the asphalt paved road, it would take forever to arrive so he crashed through a wooden fence in attempts to create a shortcut to the dirt road that leads to the countryside. Gunshots were fired at the van in an attempt to scare him off route but to no avail.
Nearly reaching the dirt road he spotted in the distance a blockade with soldiers bearing big machine guns and big dogs. He had to ditch the van. Slowly he crawled out and into the bushes slipping past a few of the guards. Growls and barking graced him as the dogs got hold of his scent. He got up and ran through the bushes quickly but quietly in an attempt to avoid being spotted but the dogs were behind him. Close on his trail he had to do something. The dogs suddenly stopped as they ripped through a brown coloured fur jacket. The dogs now lost his scent was taken back to their post.
Home sweet home, he arrived but no wife. He searched desperately in every room but to no avail.
"She wasn't here so where had she gone" he thought to himself.
With no leads nor hints or clues to follow he'd strucked a dead end. For all he knew, his wife could have been mauled to death by one of those things out there. Suddenly he heard soft footsteps sneaking accross the living room floor but the creaking of the floors gave away the element of supprise. He picked up a baseball bat he had laying in the corner of the room then he proceeded to peer through the crack of the bedroom door. His wife, but where had she been this whole time?
He came out of the bedroom and called to her, startling her into almost dropping the glasses she held in her hands.
"where have you been? You know how long I've been looking for you?, Do you even know what's going on out there?" he asked
She had heard the news on the radio before it went dead and she went to gather some supplies from the store further up the way. There were patrols all over so she had to sneak past them all in an attempt to get the supplies before they both starved.
"but where r the supplies?" he asked.
"oh, umm... I dropped them on my way back. I was chased by a patrol dog." she explained
But he knew she was hiding something from him. He proceeded as normal baring all the windows and doors from any outside disturbances or intruders while they slept. Night fell quickly as a blanket of clouds covered the sky dimming the light from the moon heavily. Mr and Mrs Johnson locked their bedroom door before bed and Mr Johnson placed his bat close to his side of the bed just in case of any issues while they slept.
Mr Johnson was awoken by the howling and growling of a creature outside then he heard voices in the distance getting closer. He woke Mrs Johnson before making their way to the back door waiting for a chance to escape. Scratching and clawing their way trying to get inside, the creatures were called away and suddenly vanished into the dark of night. The Johnsons blew a sigh of relief before going back to bed, but they couldn't sleep so they talked softly with their eyes wide open also listening for anything out of the ordinary.
Mr Johnson could only think of how strange his wife had been acting since he left. The thought of her cheating crossed his mind maybe a million times but he shook it off completely. There had to be another reason but what? He pondered until he eventually fell back asleep.
