"So! Round two." Luke said, pulling up to Mark and John's.
"Yep." I muttered, getting out of the car and probably slamming the door harder than necessary. Like last time, there were a few guys hanging around the place, intimidating and permanent scowls on their faces. Black leather jackets, blueish purple bruises, and snarling faces that turned into something closer to lust when I stepped closer surrounded me, but I was determined to seem indifferent to them.
And to the boy next to me who I definitely did not like as a crush.
Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope.
Not ever brining that up.
A too strong hand fell on my shoulder, forcing my body to turn around. It belonged to a man with untamed hair that was clearly supposed to look like "I rolled out of bed but I still look hot", but didn't pull it off. Luke hadn't noticed; he'd just gone inside.
Fuck.
"What do you want?" I snapped, angry about handled like a doll.
"What do I want, girlie?" The man chuckled darkly. "Do I look like I'm in the mood for snappy questions?"
"Well, if you don't get your filthy hand off me, those may continue." I demanded. The man didn't do anything, only tightened his grip and growled.
Think, Cole. You've been in a place like this before. You can get out of it. My thoughts were frantic, working in overdrive to get me out of this.
"Girlie, I have a few friends who would pay a pretty penny for something fine like you," The man said, one hand still firm on my shoulder, the other tracing a grimy finger down my cheek. I snarled, something that sounded foreign and more animal than human, but the man just chuckled humorlessly again and took his finger away. "Guess they'll have to teach you some manners, girlie. They don't like girls with sass."
"Then my taste is poisonous for your palate. Let me go." I seethed, trying to wrench my arm out of his grip, but the man was too strong.
"LUKE!" I yelled, really desperate now, but no response came.
"What did you say, girlie? Who were you calling?" The man hissed, suddenly seeming terrified.
His grip loosened the slightest bit.
Seizing the opportunity, I tried to yank myself out of his grip, but his hand tightened more and I could almost feel my arm bruising. "Who were you calling?"
"Luke."
The man's eyes widened. "You're with him? You're the girl he's talking about?"
"What?" I ask, attempting to get out of his grip, still without success.
"They call him Red Lightning, girlie. And they call him that for a reason. If you're calling him Luke, then you must be..."
His sentence never got finished.
A punch was landed on the man so fast I had no time to register what happened. I thought some freak invisible force had attacked the man, when I recognized the flash of blond hair and perfect body. Not focusing on what I was doing, I stumbled what I thought was out of the way. Instead, a hand grabbed me and pulled me backward. Blinking to force my contacts to work, I could now see the same figure in front of me, one arm protectively blocking the man from getting to me.
Luke.
They call him Red Lightning...
What?
"Back off, Deimos." Luke said, a low growl and a clenched fist ready to strike. "Or I'll kick you where it hurts. And then some."
"Possessive, Red? Then again, you were always one for fire, and fire takes without mercy..."
"I said, back off."
"Always the talker, never the doer." The man named Deimos yawned, but a spark of equal amounts fear and annoyance was visible in his eye.
Before I knew what I was doing, I wrapped my hand around Luke's wrist. "Listen, as much as you'd like to beat this fucker up, he's not worth your time. There are bigger problems in this world than an excess of testosterone."
Luke gritted his teeth and I could feel pure muscle straining against my grip, but I held him back and he seemed to stop resisting me. "Fine."
"If you dare make a comment when we head inside," I snarled, venom rising in me as I turned my attention to Deimos, "I will not stop him again. And I will thoroughly enjoy it when he gets angry to the point where he tears off your limbs one. By. One."
Deimos swallowed and took a step back.
"Am I clear?"
He nodded, but my anger, barely contained, wasn't satisfied. "Am I clear?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Still holding onto Luke's wrist, I dragged him inside. Once at his locker, I let go of Luke.
He seemed equal parts shocked and impressed. "Enjoy it, huh?"
Now that the anger had faded, it seemed extreme. "Holy shit. I said that."
"Yeah, you did."
"It was stupid."
"No."
I looked up at Luke's enigmatic eyes, which were filled with passion and fire that looked too much like my own. "It was hotter than hell."
