"Hey, remember Carly from Campus Min?" Luke asked on Wednesday after school. We were at the Starbucks near home, both my old one still under repair and Luke's apartment, working on homework. Luke had pulled out his phone after hearing the ding of a text message and was looking at it now.
I shrugged. "Yeah, sure."
His brow furrowed as he looked at his phone. "Says she's inviting me to a Halloween party."
"Huh?" I leaned across the table. Luke turned his phone around to show me the text.

I also noticed that there were messages above that about hooking up at some point, which bothered me

I also noticed that there were messages above that about hooking up at some point, which bothered me. But it also amused me that he'd responded to none of them.
Instead, I burst out laughing. "First off, that girl uses more exclamation points than a kindergartener. Second, she spelled Halloween wrong. And third," I tried to affect a look of seriousness with dismal failure, "when did you become 'Lukie?'"

Luke's flustered look was the best thing I'd seen all day.

I headed to the fridge to pull together something like a dinner while Luke headed to his bedroom to punch things after getting home. I was in the mood to cook, so I went to check the fridge. There wasn't much, just leftovers and some takeout.
I needed to make a grocery list, then.

I made my way to the tiny pantry to take inventory of that too. While digging through, I came across a box of brownie mix.

Huh.

Change of plans, I guess.

Except for when I checked the fridge again, I noticed there were no eggs and not nearly enough butter.
No caramel.

Time to make a trip to the store.
