It was a normal day, like any other, and I was going out for my usual morning walk. I said hi to my apartment neighbor Mrs. Clark and her dog Tiffany as usual, and headed down the street towards the quiet part of town,Metallica blasting through my headphones. There was nothing to hint at the future terror soon to come;no strange storms or crop circles. Just a peaceful summer's day.. I waved at everyone I passed, some of them waving back, and others giving me the middle finger. I wasn't too popular in my town, due to my "freak" lifestyle. I love the color black, listen to heavy metal, and..Well, I think you get my point. Anyway, that was the last thing I saw..Those people who hated me.. Because, after that, I ran across the street. I didn't see the truck coming, spiraling out of control. Nor did I see the strange creatures eating the driver. But I did feel the sharp pain, as the truck hit me, and everything went black.

I opened my eyes later on, as I heard an annoying beeping sound, and found myself in a hospital room. I tried to sit up, and pain shot through my body. I sighed, and decided to just stay still, until I heard the screaming start. The screams echoed through the halls outside, and I dimly wondered what was happening. I forced myself to sit up, and walked over to the door, flinching as someone pounded on it. I looked out to see the girl I was dating, a police officer named Jennifer, and instantly yanked open the door, let her inside, and shut it. She carefully looked me over, and sighed in relief. "You weren't bitten. Good." I asked,"Bitten? What are you talking about, babe??" She said,"There are these things; these monsters who bite people, and those people become like the monsters." I laughed a little, and said,"Wow. You're playing a prank on me? Good one." She grabbed me by my shirt, and said,"Listen to me!! They're everywhere out there, and they'll find us soon.." She handed me a gun, and said,"I know you know how to use this. Considering who your Dad is." I nodded, and said,"I do. I also know self defense, knife throwing, and..How to use a sword, though Dad doesn't know that part."

She said,"Good. Now, I want you to run. Run as fast as you can out of the hospital, and get your things. I'll be right behind you, okay?" I nodded, and she opened the door. I ran out into the hall, almost throwing up as the strong scent of copper hit my nose hard, and kept running, getting more terrified by the second, as I heard eerie growls echoing nearby. I almost slipped, my bare feet slicking with blood from the floor, but caught myself. I looked behind me, and saw Jennifer running after me, horrible creatures staggering and running after her. My heart raced in my chest, and I saw a creature with black, matted hair, no eyes, wearing a doctor's scrubs, and blood dripping from its skin lunge at her, trying to sink its teeth into her shoulder. I aimed the gun Jen had given me at the thing, and pulled the trigger, blowing out its brains before it could bite her. She ran faster, and for a minute, I thought we had it made..I smiled, and then, something seemed to happen in slow motion.

I watched, horrified, as a creature raced out of a room next to Jen, and crashed into her, landing on top of her on the floor. I heard her scream, as it buried its face in her chest, and I remember screaming her name. I fired shot after shot into the creatures now trying to take a bite out of my bleeding and screaming girlfriend, but there were too many. Within seconds, Jen was silent, and I could hear the sounds of wet flesh and organs being torn into. I watched the creatures slowly look at me, and I ran as fast as I could, everything blurry and confusing as I felt tears stream down my cheeks. I finally made it to an Exit, and raced outside, both surprised and grateful as I noticed that there weren't any creatures around..At least for the moment. I figured they must be attracted by sound and/or smell, so I covered my mouth, and sobbed quietly, memories of me and Jen flashing through my mind, and her screams still sounding in my ears. I finished crying, and stood, my body still sore from being hit by the truck, and tried to figure out what I should do next. I decided the best plan was to get to my apartment, grab my weapons and some other things, and look for other people. I couldn't possibly be the only one left, but the thought that I might be was terrifying beyond imagination.

I slowly and quietly began walking through the town, seeing those things. Zombies, my brain told me..They were everywhere, and I had to be extremely careful not to make any noise, or I would end up like Jennifer. I eventually made it to the apartment complex I lived in, and quietly went up the steps, dead bodies, blood, and trash everywhere I looked. I used my key, and quietly unlocked my front door, going inside. I gagged, smelling something rotten and decaying, and froze, as I heard shuffling footsteps close by. I ducked behind my couch, and carefully peeked out, feeling shock and nausea flow through me. I saw my father, the Sheriff, stumbling around the kitchen, with his head hanging almost off his shoulders, his spine and muscle visible. His throat had clearly been ripped out, and blood stained every inch of his shredded uniform. I knew I couldn't use my gun, because it would attract more zombies. I shook, breathing hard, knowing I was all alone now. My girlfriend was gone, my dad was gone, and the few friends I had were gone. I saw my dad's hunting crossbow on the floor nearby, and slowly crawled towards it, trying not to make any noise. My fingers brushed against the cold metal, when a floorboard creaked underneath me. I whispered,"Shit.." I looked up, as my dad walked quickly towards me, and raised the crossbow. His rotting arms reached for me, and I fired, shaking, the bolt sinking into his brain. He fell down on the floor, completely dead this time.

I stood up, my knees and hands shaking violently, as I gripped the crossbow tightly. I cautiously made my way to my room, and seeing I was safe, grabbed my big black army backpack. I shoved clothes, a first aid kit, a heavy duty flashlight, a thermos, and spare batteries for everything inside, then unlocked the safe in my room. I wrapped the gun belt around my waist, and picked the revolvers with silencers, sliding them into the holsters. I then slid a hunting knife into my boot, and grabbed a duffel bag. I packed every spare gun and knife I had into the duffel bag, not wanting to be caught in the middle of the zombie apocalypse without a weapon. I slipped the crossbow onto my back, and grabbed spare bolts from my dad's room, looking back at the room that was once my home. I took a deep breath, and checked my phone, finding that some big evacuation camp was in Atlanta. I closed my eyes, taking deep breaths in and out, then went out the front door, and quietly down the steps. I looked around the town I had lived in my whole life, and then, started the long walk to Atlanta..
