Maggie sat silently at the table, no emotion crossing her face, though she was terrified, and worried about what was happening to Glenn in the next room, as she heard flesh being beaten into a bloody pulp, and the man, Merle, taunting the love of her life. She distinctly remembered Charlie having warned them about a small town of survivors near the prison, run by an insane dictator called the Governor.
She strained against the tape binding her arms and legs, and swallowed hard, hearing footsteps coming her way. After watching the match of two women trying to slaughter each other in an arena filled with Walkers, she had no doubt that Charlie hadn't been lying, and that her being tortured like Glenn was almost inevitable. She looked up, as the door swung open, then shut and locked, and light footsteps made their way to the chair across from her. Her eyes widened, as she saw the woman from the arena who won sitting there, the black hood from her jacket covering her ice blue eyes in shadow, and the bottom half of her face covered with a skull patterned mask.
Maggie took a deep breath, steeling herself, and muttered, "You gonna kill me like you did that woman in the arena? If you are, then do it. I'm not telling you anything." She watched the woman blink across from her, and an angry, somehow familiar voice replied, "I should, you know..I should kill you and your boyfriend both, for even stepping foot here." Maggie froze, ice and shock running through her blood, and she whispered, "Take it off..Take that damn mask off, and let me see you." The voice replied, "Fine..But you might not like or recognize the face you see underneath the damn thing."
I slowly threw the hood off my head, then reached up, and pulled the mask down, then yanked it off, slamming it down on the table. I raised an eyebrow at Maggie, ice running through my veins, and asked, "Better?" She stayed silent, but I could see her swallowing in fear and something else I couldn't quite place, and for some reason, the fact that I could see tears in her eyes pissed me off a lot. "Don't you dare cry! I warned you! I said to stay away from this place, but you couldn't! You had to go and get yourself fucking captured! And once you get brought here, there's no escaping it, no matter what they tell you! And they'll kill you in the blink of an eye, if the Governor tells them to..I'll have to kill you, if he tells me to!"
Maggie flinched, the venom in Charlie's voice slicing deep into her heart, and as she glanced at the woman's face, she didn't recognize her best friend, or sister in those haunted, angry eyes. A tiny scar went from the top of her left eyebrow to the bottom of the eyelid, bruises and cuts covered her face, and she'd gotten taller, and more muscular. And the main things Maggie noticed were the coldness in her eyes, the emptiness of her facial expressions, and how short her hair was, and she dimly wondered what the hell happened to change her so much. "You'd kill me? After all Rick did for you, and me and Glenn did for you? After everything we all did for you? It means nothing?"
I shot up out of the chair, and slammed my knife deep into the wood of the table, glaring at her, and breathing hard. "Don't you dare! You all left me for dead! I told you and Glenn about this place, and I bet you never even looked for me, did you?! I waited, you know..I never once gave you up..Despite everything he- I never told him a damn thing, and you abandoned me!" She slowly looked up at me, pain flashing through her eyes, a few stray brown strands of hair falling into her eyes, and she slowly shook her head, a few tears slipping down her face. "No, Charlie..We thought you were gone.." I stopped moving, freezing, as I spotted a familiar article of clothing on her body, and swallowed hard. "That's- You're wearing my jacket..Where the hell did you get that?"
Maggie whispered, "The night you left, we heard you screaming, and went to find you. When we got there, we found this jacket, your backpack, and your sword lying in the road, and there was- There was a lot of blood, Charlie..And there were Walkers all over a body, and by the time we killed them all, there was almost nothing left..We thought-" I finished, "You all thought it was me.." I slowly peeled off my jacket, hanging it over the back of the chair, and sat back down, feeling confusion and pain for the first time in awhile. "It wasn't me..Some of the blood was mine, but the rest were Merle's men. I cut them up, trying to get away..They brought me back here, and- Never mind..All that matters is that you're here now, and you're in danger."
She looked confused, her eyes flickering to the knife in the table, and I pulled it out, sheathing it. "I'm so sorry, Maggie..You and Glenn should never have come near here..Now you're trapped, like me, and I can't help you..Not here."
Maggie watched Charlie stand up again, noticing the bruises and cuts up and down the skin she could see, as well as scars that hadn't been there when they'd parted ways. She whispered, "He'll punish you, won't he? For not torturing me?" She watched Charlie turn to face her, and saw anger, sadness, and fear flicker in those haunted eyes. "I don't give a damn, at this point..Unless he forces me to, I won't touch a fucking hair on your head..I'm a monster, but even monsters have hearts, Maggie..I'm not who you think I am anymore, but that doesn't mean I'll forget everything you and Glenn did for me. The best I can do for now is to leave you alone."
I froze, my hand on the door handle, as Maggie whispered, "I thought we lost you, Charlie..A lot has happened since you've been gone. T Dog is dead, Lori's gone, and the baby's a girl. Daddy lost his leg to a Walker, and Rick..Rick's not doing so good.." I felt my heart stir with sadness at the mention of Lori and T Dog being lost, and I whispered, "I'm sorry..If I could change the way things turned out, I would.." I opened the door, my heart going back to being almost completely frozen, but there was one little piece that just couldn't let go of the crush I had on Maggie,or how I used to feel about my family..
I went into the next room, and told Merle, "I'll take care of this one..Go take a break, and fuck a girl or something." He smirked at me, and shoved past me, leaving me alone with the bloody and beaten Glenn. I knelt beside Glenn, and whispered, "The best I can do is keep him away for a bit, but I can't promise any more.." He slowly looked up at me, spitting out a lot of blood, and blinked slowly. "Charlie?" His eyes widened, and I whispered, "Yeah, Walker Bait, it's me..What did I tell you about protecting your girl, asshole?" He coughed, and whispered, "I tried..I tried to, Charlie..But I couldn't even do that..You're not real, are you? This is brain damage, or blood loss." I shook my head, and slapped him. "Nope..I'm real, dumbass. Now stay awake, you hear me?" He nodded, and I sighed in relief..
