The dragons....the dragons. They're all I can think about now. Are they hurt without me? Will they be okay?
"Well!" says Sophie as we drive towards her friend's house where we're going to bunk for the night. "That was something, wasn't it?"
"Yes," I agree. "It certainly was," I'm leaning against the window in the car, my breath fogging it up.
"Bella? Are you okay?" she asks, patting my knee.
"I....yeah. I'm fine," I say. In my head, I wonder how the dragons are doing.
I wish my brain wasn't so full of how the dragons were doing. I'm sure I would have been able to have a little fun--a lot of fun, actually--if I weren't so worried. But the thing is, I brought Blanq and her babies here. And it's my job to get them out. And the more that I think of it, the more I realize that I didn't have to leave. I could have just....hidden. I didn't know what those sun elves intentions were.
But if they were bad....I could be dead.
"We'll be at the house soon. I'm sure you're tired and need a little rest," she says.
"Yeah," I mutter.
Sophie's friend's house is a small cottage. I like it's quaint look and it looks so cozy that I almost stop thinking of the dragons.
"Marylin!" cries Sophie as she swoops inside. "I haven't seen you in so long!"
"Since the last festival, I believe. You always stop here after. I'm like your little hotel," says Sophie's friend.
"Well, I hope you don't mind," says Sophie, pushing me forwards. "This is Bella. She's my new....I'll say daughter. I found her on my estate, hurt and unconscious and I adopted her."
"Well. It's nice to meet you, Bella," I shake Marylin's hand politely. "It's nice to meet you, too," I tell her.
"Bella's tired from the festival. Maybe she'd like a little nap before dinner? Would you, Bella?"
"Yes, please," I nod and Marylin shows me upstairs. The bedroom is cheery, white lace curtains hanging off the windows and sunshine yellow paint dons it's walls. The covers on the bed are lilac colored and so is the rug. I think that it's beautiful, but I know that I won't be staying here for long.
Maybe it's just suspicion. But I'm really worried about the dragon babies. I need to get back to them tonight. I can't wait for the morning.
"I'll call you when dinner's ready. It might be a little late, if you don't mind. I reckon that Sophie'll need a rest, too," says Marylin, shutting the door behind me.
I cross the room to a small desk. A pad of paper and a pen rest on it and I get busy writing a note. Even though she's not my real mom, I've grown to care for Sophie. She's old and if I left without telling her anything, she'd have a heart attack. So I begin to write.
Dear Sophie,
I'm sorry that I left you like this. I really hope that I don't scare you too much, but there's something I need to do. I promise you that I will see you back at your house--that's where I'm heading anyway. But I couldn't wait for another night. It was urgent.
I'll see you there. I know the way, so don't worry about me. Say thank you to Marylin for me because she was very nice to offer us her hospitality. I'll get home safely, I promise.
Love,
Bella
I sigh and set the pen down. I hope she doesn't worry about me, but I can't leave the dragons alone. And now all I need to do is steal a bike. I saw a few outside Marylin's house and she has to be too old to ride--they're probably for decoration. I quickly add a p.s. to the letter (thank you for the bike) and then I open the window and climb out into the darkening sky.
