The smell of freshly baked pastry were hitting her nostrils as soon as she got in. She was greeted with a warm smile by the workers around, most of them were still busy placing the pastry and baking more in the kitchen. Chunhua was thankful to her roommate, Kate who suggested to come over to the bakery for breakfast and it instantly reminds her of a chocolate shop nearby. Kate have always been punctual, she left early in the morning to go to class while her sleepyhead self still stuck on the bed.
Most food were so mouthwatering to her, everything looked good and that she have bigger appetite than she always does. Maybe it was an effect before her period. Easily hungry and crave a lot of food. Although she's happy here, she missed the food back home, korean foods, chinese foods and her friends.
In between classes, Chunhua would stare long at the notes that were made for her, written in the lime green colored book so that she have the motivation to make her own notes. As a freshman studying abroad, using a lot of books and papers, she had to buy some stationery there and she can consider herself as a regular.
Suddenly, there was a voice that hit her eardrums when a student sat down and placed her books on the table next to her. She turned to her side, staring at her, trying to keep it lowkey and not so obvious that she's a little lost when she heard the question.
"Wie lange dauert der Unterricht?" The student asked, making eye contact with her, as confused as a 'huh' face only, she knows that she was the one that the student asked since there were no other people beside her.
Because of the sudden silence, the student asked for her name, "Wie heißen Sie?"
It's sad that she can understand and translate the language in her own language but she cant answer it in a correct full sentence. She was confused of the person that just sits next to her, asking her things. Simple questions like what is your name made her smile and proudly reply, "Ich heiße Chunhua."
The person suddenly repeat the question she asked before, "Wie lange dauert der Unterricht?"
In the inside, Chunhua was dying to curse in front of her like- 'what the hell??' She made a fake smile and continue the conversation by speaking in English, "Um, Sorry, I don't speak fluent German."
The student stopped for a moment with a paused-mouth-opened-look. "Oh." Her lips suddenly form a smile, there was a friendly vibe scaring her as the student look at her. Her voice was kind of high pitched when she responded in English. "Why didn't you say so? What was your name again?- Chunhua. Right, you're asian. I can see that. Anyways- I'm Carrie."
Chunhua seriously didnt expect that she was a little- talkative. Even the words she said was nonstop and at how fast she talk once she open her mouth. She made herself comfortable, smiling like a creepy doll as she look at her new friend, Carrie who was asking again. "But you understand some typical questions, right? like- lernst du Deutsch?"
She listened first to her talk then nodded, referring the typical question thingy she asked. "Yes." "No, that was a question." Carrie corrected. Now Chunhua's mouth turned to a shape of an 'o', replying, "Ja."
Ja means Yes in German and as far as she learn, she can only remember simple stuff and replies in German. Thank god she can also communicate in English. Carrie then spoke, shrugging after. "but you can try talking in German and English. It would help. Unless you get it wrong."
Carrie was unexpectedly more cheerful than Kate, and is a great person. She offered to pay for Chunhua's lunch and stuff, hanging out and walking home together already. Some days, she came over to their apartment and studies with her. Kate felt a little weird, Chunhua had her own roommate that is her- even though she's better in English than Carrie, she asked herself why Chunhua and her never had a tutoring-each-other session.
📑
Other than walking around like the librarian does, Chunhua wanted to make sure that she does more work than the librarian, not to only putting back the books to its place but also making sure the library was clean so other people can comfortably use the public facilities. Some people just didn't have enough time to out back the books they used because of rushing back to class and didnt have enough time and such. She also had to clear the table, rearrange the books back into the shelves.
Chunhua would see some trash, crumpled paper and even plastic wraps of candy on tables and floor. Spending her nothing-to-do time, she clean up for others, arrange seats, books and greet people. She noticed the same seat as the days before were occupied though every time she came to see, the person left its books on the table, a little of its stationary and there has always been the same chocolate next to it. The owner- she have never seen it or even know who it was.
Just thinking about Germany's chocolate, it reminded her of him. Funny- a short memory that was unforgettable. She suddenly missed the taste of the chocolate- craving for it just by looking at it. There were voices of some guys talking in German which she didn't really understood, walking towards the huge door of the entrance about to exit. They sounded rushing from what she thinks.
The owner seemed to notice that she was trying to clear the table. Right on that time, he was about to leave, smiling at how she stayed on his place looking at the chocolate. Seemed like there were movies flashed from the chocolate.
"You can have it!" The person yell-whispered not so loudly, referring to the chocolate.
She turned her head towards him, his back were facing her as he took his coat off the rack near the door. Happy to have it, she still hesitate to even touch the chocolate. Looking back at the owner that were about to leave, she stared at him. She cant help but to stare at it. His body was well-built, long legs, and his hair was dark brown, a little long than other guys she sees.
At first glance, Chunhua thought of something odd caught her attention- she then immediately notice a familiar coat that was worn by him. Shiny as ever- neat, clean, pretty and long. Like her type- choice of clothing. It was hers. Was now his. A realization of reality hit her once a name flashed in her mind. Heart beating were as loud as if it was in front of her eardrums- the scent that lingered in the air, left a feeling she cant describe by now.
'It's him. He's here.'
