«My heart skips eight beats at once. If we were meant to be, we would have been by now. See what you wanna see, but all I see is him right now.»
---
The bare sound of the music playing in the radio filled the car. Jenna had her whole attention set on the road, while Eden stole glances in her direction from time to time. Her heart pounded loudly on her ears, her hands gripping the steering wheel a bit sweaty. The thing was, Jenna knew she shouldn't have put herself in that situation, and yet, she did it anyway. The mere sensation of having Eden sitting by her side on the car felt surreal.
Eden no longer lived in the same place Jenna once used to visit, indicating her his new direction was the only exchange of words between them since he got into the car. It didn't feel awkward, but if he could get a word out of her he would feel like a winner.
"You can turn off at the next exit." Eden told her. Jenna simply nodded, her eyes never abandoning the road in front of her.
His eyes lingered on her profile. Eden bit the inside of his cheek; how could he ever believe he would get over Jenna Lavryn?
She did as he told her, driving into a street surrounded by a bunch of beautiful houses. Jenna waited for him to tell her where to stop. Turns out the guy had moved to one of the houses at the end of the vicinity.
"Right there." Eden indicated her where to stop.
As soon as they reached the house, Jenna parked in front of the gate. The house was obviously bigger than the one she knew, also he didn't have as many neighbors as before. Her plan was to keep the car running, at the end of it, the idea was to just drop him off and get to the restaurant, but for some reason, she decided to turn the engine off. The politeness inside of her stopped her from turning to him and telling him to get out of the car.
Not that she wanted to do such thing anyway.
Jenna took a deep breath. Her hands still resting on the steering wheel. "Well, safe and sound." Finally, she dared to look at him. Eden smiled.
"My guardian angel." He put his hand on his chest, staring lovingly at her. Jenna clenched her jaw, feeling the pressure on her chest. What did she have to do to stop herself from falling into that hole again?
Jenna shook her head. "I would call it a free Uber drive." The dim light coming from the street made the glint of amusement on his eyes more notorious.
"Would you like to come in?" He offered, sounding way more confident than he should. Jenna knew better than that, he seemed to dismiss that fact.
"That doesn't sound like a good idea." The answer was a bit too obvious, or at least she thought so. The fact that she decided to make the mistake to take him to his house didn't change anything. Jenna Lavryn was a good person, and sometimes she forgot not everyone deserved that side of her.
Eden unbuckled himself, getting even more comfortable in the passenger seat. Jenna raised an eyebrow. He had promised to behave. "I've got something for you. I mean, it's been sitting there for years, thought it'd be fair for you to have it." The way he smiled, like there was nothing wrong with them.
Jenna slowly nodded. "I'll wait in the car, you can bring it here." She wouldn't lie, it did increase her interest.
"Jen." Eden tilted his head, analyzing her. "I said I would behave, didn't I? I would never do anything to you. Come on." It's not like she didn't trust him, well, the distrust between them was already there, but Jenna had promised herself she needed to stay as far away from Eden as possible.
